officially we have no offensive game plan now other than to get in field goal range. dick forgot about defense. now herm will forget about the offense. defense and field goals.

KANSAS CITY - First, the Chiefs were going to trade Trent Green and Larry Johnson.

Then they were going to draft Brady Quinn. Then they were going to trade two fifth-round picks for a fourth-round pick. Then they were going to trade Green again.

Then there was a Johnson sighting at Arrowhead, and that caused a slight buzz.

And in the end, amid all the energy, the Chiefs simply drafted the best seven guys they could find and went home.

"Sometimes," Chiefs president Carl Peterson said, "the best trade you make is the one that doesn't happen."

The Chiefs never did retrieve that elusive fourth-round pick they gave for running back Michael Bennett last year (they're now calling Bennett their fourth-round choice), and they never did draft a cornerback.

"The corners went early, as we thought they would," vice president of player personnel Bill Kuharich said. "We were playing catch up."

Otherwise, they did just about what everyone thought they would.

Kansas City took a receiver, a defensive end, a defensive tackle, a running back, a kicker, an offensive tackle and a tight end, the final four coming on day two of the NFL draft on Sunday.

They filled some holes. They talked as if every pick they made was an absolute heist. They even drafted a tight end, Michael Allen of Whitworth in the seventh round, who once had a 251-yard receiving day. That was against Puget Sound, but still.

"He probably had to help line the field," Chiefs coach Herm Edwards joked.

In the fifth round, the Chiefs took Louisville running back Kolby Smith, a 5-11, 220-pound cutback runner who prides himself on blocking and receiving. He averaged 5.7 yards per carry last season, filling in for the injured Michael Bush.

"He's very versatile," Edwards said. "He can play fullback, and he can play tailback. He doesn't have great speed, but what he does do is he's a little bit of a picker when he runs."

The only real surprise of the day was Kansas City's second fifth-round choice, which it used on kicker Justin Medlock of UCLA. The Chiefs already have two kickers, Aaron Barrett, who recently signed as a free agent, and Lawrence Tynes, who has a one-year contract.

Close followers of Edwards' career may have seen a replacement for Tynes coming, however. When Edwards was with the Jets, kicker Doug Brien missed two potential game-winning 40-plus yard field goals against the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 2004 playoff game. He was released almost immediately.

Tynes missed a 23-yard field goal on one of the Chiefs' only real scoring threats in a playoff loss to the Colts last season. Edwards said he intends to bring Tynes to training camp, but he'll have to earn his job this season. Last year he went through camp unopposed.

"I went down to (defensive coordinator) Gunther Cunningham's office after we did this and told him, 'Officially, we're going to play good defense and kick field goals,'" Edwards said.

The sixth-round choice, offensive tackle Herb Taylor, was a four-year starter at TCU and a first-team All-Mountain West Conference selection as a junior and senior. At 295 pounds, Taylor is a little light, but the Chiefs like his athletic ability.

Green still in red

Peterson spoke to the Miami Dolphins regarding a trade for Green on Sunday morning, prior to the beginning of the fourth round, but he said the Dolphins had not budged from their original offer of a sixth-round choice.

As it stands, Green remains the Chiefs' returning starting quarterback, although Peterson was uncomfortable placing that label on him.

"I certainly think he would compete for the starting quarterback job," Peterson said. "It's semantics. We're not even playing football today. We start July 28 at training camp."
