E3 2013

Time to geek out.
What are you looking forward too?

I'm looking forward to more on the PlayStation 4, a competent Vita lineup, and some NHL 14 news.

Bullshit. Pure bullshit.

Maybe in fantasyland. Dlc and other crap would be cheaper if this were the case.
They have secured that people will pay 60bucks for a game + dlc. They will not back off of that.

Like I said before, the x bone will limit used hard disc resales because publishers will say no to resales. By doing that they can keep digital price higher.

Hopefully this will change once ps4 and its past/current way outpace x bone by 4 to 1.

Of all my friends that are current live users (20 or so) are switching to playstation predominantly.

Just need someone to start a controller swap of internals.

Oh I see your point about that. I played BF3 on the 360 so the VOIP was built in with XBL. That's a huge hindrance on the PC, you're 100% right.

I'm shocked that places like Best Buy and Walmart are still saying if you pre-order a PS4 right now that you'll get a release date system.

There's no way that they have that many launch PS4's available.

I think demand is going to be through the roof and there's going to be a ton of pissed off people that think they are getting a launch day PS4.

Is there any # out there for number of pre-ordered systems?

Xbox One Games At E3 Were Running On Windows 7 With Nvidia GTX Cards

You know how EA's COO Peter Moore told Geoff Keighley during the post-conference interview at E3 that the games they were showing off on stage were running on comparable dev kit specs to the actual home consoles? Well...that's not really true. What is true, however, is that to get the best performance on home console games, Microsoft made sure that they were running on the most stable system specs available on the market and that happened to be an HP powered, Windows 7 system with Nvidia's 700 series GTX GPU.

Thanks to the guys on the HFBoards, they put together a nice little cache of information on the Xbox One and PS4, strangely they had some fairly unflattering evidence of the Xbox One games not even running on Xbox One dev kits or, as Peter Moore put it, comparable specs...unless, Microsoft is switching from AMD cards to Nvidia cards in a last ditch effort to raise the price of manufacturing the console?

Anyway, Julian Rignall from US Gamers had an interesting Tweet to share, which on its own is quite harmless, noting...

Well, that's just some possible guesswork and speculation from one person encountering an error on an Xbox One and there's no way that any of that can remotely be proven because why would Microsoft not trust their own dev kits or comparable specs to run high-end games when...BAM!

Oh dayum!

And wait for it, wait for it...wait...for...it...Boom!

Money shot!

Truth be told, none of this should be a surprise to most people given that all E3 demos run their games on high-end PCs; it's a smoke and mirrors circus to sell the idea of the game, sort of like how pro wrestling sells the idea of fighting despite being scripted. We should all be used to it by now and it's just common practice [from most studios] given that the dev kits or comparable specs aren't usually finalized at this point.

However, in this particular case it does look bad on Microsoft's end that they didn't even trust to run the games from their latest Windows 8 operating system. As many people questioned on Twitter, why not Windows 8? Heck, Windows 8 is what one of the Xbox One's operating systems is based on. Opting for Windows 7 during E3 seems like Microsoft may not have had the confidence in their latest OS to put on the show they required or demo the games in the best of light.

I suppose the only real damning thing about this kind of exposure is that Microsoft didn't even use “comparable specs" from the company providing them with video cards in their home console. For those of you who don't know the Xbox One will run on a modified AMD GPU that, according to Extreme Tech, is on the level of a mid-ranged Radeon 7790. I guess the 7790 wasn't powerful enough for the Xbox One's E3 games eh? They needed a real manly card like the GTX 780, eh?

I guess it's like that old saying: If you want to dazzle on the grand stage you go GTX or you go home.

Also...poor, poor Windows 8. Even Microsoft doesn't like you.

PS4 Games At E3 Ran On PS4 Dev Hardware, Not High-End PCs

So it appears that there's now a big fallout over the whole pageantry of E3's glitz and glamor. So earlier today we ran an article about the Xbox One games at E3 actually running on high-end PC hardware. Well, a few of Sony's first and second party developers have stepped forward to comment how Sony wasn't all about smoke and mirrors...the games were running on actual PS4 development hardware.

The dev kits for the PS4 are apparently a lot more complete than what Microsoft has to offer for the Xbox One, as PlayStation Lifestyle caught comments from various developers working on games for the PS4 who were also attending E3, and The Witness' Jonathan Blow Tweeted that...

Quote:
“It is not true as the article says that “all E3 demos run on hi-end PCs”... The Witness was running on PS4 dev hardware, and it looked to me like all the other PS4 games were running on dev kits as well.”

Dev hardware is the hardware that will be in the final retail box, but in a less consumer-oriented package.

All the indies I know were running on the PS4.

We worked very hard to get our game running on the actual PS4 hardware and operating system in time for the show. As did many other devs. That is kind of crazy considering consoles are supposed to be on the shelves with these games in 5-6 months.

During Microsoft’s press show I was impressed by how good the games looked given the console’s specs. But if they weren’t running on those specs then it becomes pretty questionable.

I actually don’t want XB1 to fail because we need competition to keep things healthy.
Well, I stand corrected. Bravo to you for not pulling an Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Blow wasn't the only one who chimed in on the E3 shenanigans, though. Sucker Punch's Jason Connell corroborated Blow's statements, saying “Yup, we were definitely on a dev kit. [For inFamous: Second Son]”

Just to clarify this for people who aren't entirely tech savvy: Development kits are basically a set of programming and design tools to help developers make a game run for the designated platform. It contains instruction sets and code so that developers have an idea of how to fine-tune and optimize the game for the console's hardware. Usually early development kits, shortened to dev kits, have slightly higher or similar specs to the final hardware.

Now, the reason there's a lot of controversy over the news about the Xbox One games running on high-end PCs with a Windows 7 OS is because first of all, the Xbox One's core OS is based on Windows 8 and second of all, the CPU/GPU APU combination for the final hardware set is being provided by AMD, hence all the butthurt from Nvidia in their public statements knocking the consoles [via Computerworld]. The hardware at E3 were running high-end Nvidia GPUs. A bit of a far-cry from actual dev kits given that the instruction sets would be all wrong for optimizing a game for hardware that won't even be present in a retail SKU.

Anyway, this is just more free marketing buzz for Sony. And honestly, it's not like at this point we're trying to go out of our way to dig the grave deeper for the Xbox One...it was just the haphazard situation of real-life information working against Microsoft and the Xbox One.

Sorry for foiling your plans Microsoft!

And Windows 8 still loves you, Microsoft...even if you prefer Windows 7.

I agree. To be honest, the only thing I recall ever buying from Gamestop is retro games when my main system was a PS2. I suppose I could have bought NES/SNES/Sega games off of eBay, but whatever. Never bought a current generation game used. Ever. I rule.

If I have a choice between $55 used and $60 new, I'll take the $60 new. the thing that pisses me off the most about Gamestop is how they gut new games. They open them up and then sell them as new anyway. Say I buy a game as a gift for a friend and then a couple days before I give him that gift I find out he already bought it.... Guess what, Gamestop won't let you return that "new" game because it was already opened. BY THEM!!!!

Don't get me wrong, I am not anti gamestop but I do have a problem with the way they do some things.

I don't think I've ever bought anything used from them. The only thing I can remember buying from them is Killzone 3 new. Not talking shit about anyone for buying habits or anything, but some of the specific games he mentioned...I can see how maybe the pre sale aspect could have effed them over.
