Need Speaker Stands for Home Theater System

Question for you all .... I just bought this:

Yamaha 730W 6.1-Ch. Home Theater System with 5-Disc Progressive-Scan DVD/CD/MP3 Player - Silver

Model: YHT-750

There are 6 speakers - 5 that I need to find stands or wall mounts for, but I'm leaning towards stands since I don't care to jack with wiring through the walls/attic.

The stands at Best Buy were about $100 for 2. The wall mounts were about $80 for 2. Do any of you know of a source where I can find more inexpensive stands?

The speakers aren't big... maybe 5 inches tall and they don't weigh much, so we're not talking about anything massive. I don't want to take the cheap route, but damn... $250 - $300 for speaker stands and/or mounts sounds insane to me.

Gracias,

If I were you, I'd spend $100 on a router and make my own speaker stands with dowels and pine.

I've thought about that... but I lack a certain "craft" gene and my home made stands would look like a brick and broomstick attached with ductape.

You should be able to do much better than bestbuy on the internet. Its been a while but i got some decent ones off ebay. Try doing a search for "sanus". They are a pretty popular manufacture of them.

One tip is that if you decide on stands make sure the base of the speaker isnt smaller than where the will sit on the stands.

All I can say is good luck. I spent a lot of time looking and scoured home theater forums and came to the conclusion that speaker stands are the biggest racket in home theater.

I ended up making mine. But I have the advantage of being a moderately skilled woodworker.

Dude, you can hardly mess this idea up. Plus you'll have a router to keep forever. If you wish, you can buy an even cheaper router - $60 or thereabouts.

There probably is. Problem being, any custom made furniture can't compete with the mass factories in terms of pricing. The reason it was "cheaper" is because my "time" didn't cost me anything. As soon as I start doing it for a job, I start thinking about what an appropriate wage is for my labor...then the price or profit margin is shot.

Id say cables a by far is the biggest racket. Though the cost of decent stands and cabinets are pretty bad. And a lot of that shit can be hard to find discounted much.

I may just need 2 or 3 stands... I can place a couple of these on a mantle or end table. Miles, I found a pair of Sanus stands for $47.

Yea, cables might beat stands out. But there are some alternatives to cables. I'm personally not enough of an audiophile to require $6 a foot cables. However, there's really little out there in the "cheap stands" market, and you still want something that looks nice.

Yeah i honestly cant tell the difference between the more exensive cables and IMO I really dont really think there is. They look pretty cool but i think its all marketing. If there is a difference it would take some pretty highend stuff for it to show.

But your right about the stands i had to do a lot of hunting around for some cheap stands that were sturdy enough they wouldnt get knocked over. There are not many out there.

You will get the best sound field if you put them all on stands so they are the same height and in the right location. How big is the base of the speakers?

I have found some on ebay for $30 or so but i think they may be too big.
