Ever rent your R.V. out?

Okay, anyone who knows me, knows how much I hate starting a new thread about anything however, I need some input. I am thinking of renting out my 2008 fifth wheel. I live in a very tourist area near dozens of beaches that offer camping.

I am curious if anyone on this planet has rented out their R.V before, and if so, what is your thoughts on it? If you have rented an R.V before, your thoughts would be appreciated too. Thanks!

Is it just going to be parked somewhere, or are you going to let people tote it around? I'd be very wary of the latter.

Think about the damage that can be done and determine if the income would worth the upkeep.

Yep, already thought about that. No way I let some fool from the valley pull this monster around. No, My thought is to offer one of the two dozen campsites on the central coast as spots. I will deliver and set up, then remove once their stay is done. They can make the reservations for a certain campground and spot, and I will deliver it to them fully loaded with propane, linens, utensils and water.

Great point! See post 4. I guess the point is, we use this monster 6 times a year. We use another camper about four times a year. I have tried to sell it but, in this economy, no one is buying. So, since I cannot sell it, I am considering renting it out to recover some of its cost...

Honestly, I think you would need to contact your insurance company first. You must be covered for anyone other than yourself when it comes to driving the vehicle. If nobody else is covered and something happens, then you are the one that would have to foot the bill.

That is a great point but, like the wife and I talked about, it is a fifth wheel that I would deliver to a specified site that the renter chose. I will not allow someone to pull this rig across the country. Still, you are probably right. I should let my insurance company know of my intentions to rent out the unit.

Yeah... that sounds like an insurance nightmare. Lots of bad could happen there.

Oh, absolutely. You don't want to take the loss if some fool builds his campfire too close to it and burns it to the ground, and your insurance company tells you to pound sand because they didn't have it insured as a rental.

Not sure how you would set this up, how are people going to know you have the RV to rent out? If you do a website, I would have a form for them to fill out and make them attach a copy of their ID so that you can run some sort of background check on them. You need to know who you are renting to first hand. If you are renting to party animals good luck, if you are renting to a family your odds would probably be better.

I actually have the ability already to check people's credit as I own two rental homes. However, that does not give me the ability to determine if they are party animals. As for the latter, I was thinking of posting on Craigslist in Fresno, Bakersfield, etc. Those are the people who come to visit on a regular basis to the central coast.

Party animals= single groups wanting to rent, i.e. a group of guys or a group of girls, chances are they want to party.

But, since you own rental properties, you probably know everything I know so I will just say good luck!!
