Trump attacks protections for immigrants from ‘shithole’ countries

President Trump grew frustrated with lawmakers Thursday in the Oval Office when they floated restoring protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal, according to two people briefed on the meeting.

“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump said, according to these people, referring to African countries and Haiti. He then suggested that the United States should instead bring more people from countries like Norway, whose prime minister he met Wednesday.

The comments left lawmakers taken aback, according to people familiar with their reactions. Sens. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) and Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) proposed cutting the visa lottery program by 50 percent and prioritizing countries already in the system, a White House official said.

A White House spokesman declined to offer an immediate comment on Trump’s remarks

Outlining a potential bipartisan deal, the lawmakers discussed restoring protections for countries that have been removed from the temporary protected status program while adding $1.5 billion for a border wall and making changes to the visa lottery system.

The administration announced this week that it was removing the protection for citizens of El Salvador.

Trump had seemed amenable to a deal earlier in the day during phone calls, aides said, but shifted his position in the meeting and did not seem interested.

Graham and Durbin thought they would be meeting with Trump alone and were surprised to find immigration hard-liners such as Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) and Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) at the meeting. The meeting was impromptu and came after phone calls Thursday morning, Capitol Hill aides said.

[White House: No deal yet on immigration]

After the meeting, Marc Short, Trump’s legislative aide, said the White House was nowhere near a bipartisan deal on immigration.

“We still think we can get there,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at the daily White House news briefing.

He was in boot camp when Vietnam was called off. But was ready and heading to serve his nation. I did not enlist. Like most liberals (yes, I was a liberal back in my youth, don't blame me I didn't know any better ) , I couldn't keep my pecker in my pants so I had a kid. But I have always paid my taxes and did produce 4 children. One of which is active duty U.S.M.C. as we speak!!

And that is just the direct lineage of my family. We could do uncles, cousins, nephews, and what not, but I think you can get where I am going. My bloodline has paid their dues, EARNED their way if that is the term you prefer.

Telling me that somebody "earned" my children or grandchildren's jobs because they are willing to move to another country and work for peanuts is probably the wrong angle to HMMM a guy like me on.
I'm pretty sure the vast majority of jobs out there don't ask for your families military background. But if being in the military makes someone more deserving of having a job, I've not been playing that card enough.

I think that quote goes more to immigrants coming in willing to earn a job with hard work as opposed to someone who thinks they are entitled to a job just because they were born in this country.

No. The US worker gets preference, all things being equal. That is if the US worker even wants the job.

Liberals can call a majority of the US a shit hole filled with deplorables but if you call haiti a shithole you're spreading hate speech? Zero self awareness in the media.

Trump is kicking 200,000 Salvadorans out of the United States and forcing them back to a gang violence-ravaged and impoverished disaster zone.

Discussion I listened to today (paraphrasing) -

P1: Trump's a racist. He doesn't want anyone coming from shithole brown countries.

P2: Not true. He doesn't want people coming from shithole white countries either.

P1: Like where?

P2:

The best answer I could come up with is Germany or France.

So Durban has tried this before and was caught lying then as well..

Sick Durbin posted on his Facebook page that a GOP House member had told former President Obama during a negotiation White House meeting that he “could not stand to look at the president.”

After news broke of the alleged statement by the GOP house member, the Obama White House and the House Speaker’s office both stated that no such comment was said and that they deny Sen. Durbin’s version of the meeting. Obama’s press secretary, Jay Carney was asked the same question of whether or not such a “statement” was said to Obama, and Carney replied that he spoke to someone who was at that meeting and clearly, it did not happen. Politico at the time reached out to Durbin’s office and his office had no comment and refused to offer any further details of the Obama meeting

But that's not what he said. He wasn't talking about checking each person; he was talking about excluding entire peoples, marking them off the list based solely on where they were born, and there are way too many Americans on this forum and elsewhere who are defending that.

This is what xenophobia and nativism looks like, and every month or so we're moving a step farther into it. Unless we stop it, the end game is that we lose our country. That may sound alarmist, and you can torch me for it if you want, but it really isn't an exaggeration.

I agree that our immigration policy should be merit based, not location based.

In this specific example, context matters. If Trump was responding to a comment already based in country-based immigration, that is a lot different than if he brought up the idea himself.

It IS alarmist, and it IS an exaggeration.

I understand where you're coming from - you are taking the humanitarian slant and believe the majority of peoples trying to come here from these "shithole" locales are only trying to better their lives, and in doing so should receive all aid possible from us to assist them - but I don't understand how you cannot accept the dangers inherent in basically having open borders for those looking to escape where they're from. I would direct your attention to what is happening with the flood of immigrants swallowing up Europe right now as a reason to shut the flow off hitting this country. It doesn't make us xenophobic as a nation if we learn the lessons being taught all over the EU right now.
