AT&T would have done this anyway. Their plan for 2020 is a significantly lower headcount. This plan has been in place for about over 5 years.

The underlying story (the actual story about the jobs) is from 2008, not 2018.

It appears they are laying off these researchers due to failure and lack of results. You can't keep throwing good money after bad. They aren't cutting their R&D they are reallocating to other medical conditions and solutions. They will then hire researchers specializing in those areas.

Quote:
The company plans to use the savings to fund drug R&D in other areas. “This was an exercise to reallocate [spending] across our portfolio, to focus on those areas where our pipeline, and our scientific expertise, is strongest,” it said. Like several peers, Pfizer PFE, +0.08% has invested heavily in developing treatments for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s because of the huge need, but met disappointment when once-promising compounds failed to work during testing.

Pfizer ($PFE) has quietly shuttered a Phase II Alzheimer's drug study, noting the termination in a pipeline update released today with its annual numbers for 2015. And shares of Axovant ($AXON) tumbled 25% on the news as it faces fresh questions about the implications of the failure on a similar drug it has pushed into a Phase III trial.

They are reallocating money from over seas and paying the 8% tax on it. This money would have stayed overseas if not for the new tax bill. The Federal government will receive revenue of 8% on these dollars. Stock buybacks and dividends don't magically disappear. These are added to our economy and will lead to tax revenue and economic activity. Pfizer is a fortune 100 company and most every person in this country who has a 401k and/or pension plan owns Pfizer as an investment.

ATT and Comcast are both struggling as folks are cutting the cord. They are laying off some of their traditional workforce and trying to expand in other technologies within the company. DIRECTV sucks and is no longer a good deal if you don't have an expensive ATT cell phone package as well. They are losing customers quickly, same with cable.

To equate tax cuts with layoffs is stupid. If they didn't have the tax cuts, they most likely would have to lay off more...

So in the end, jobs were cut, but the tax cuts benefited the stockholders and owners of Pfizer.

Got it.

Do you have a pension plan or a 401k?

Do you realize these dollars would still be overseas?

Should we keep Tamba Hali next year after this years poor performance?

Should Pfizer keep these researchers after spending millions and millions of dollars with no results?

The additional researchers they hire for the reallocated R&D in a different field will be happy.

But that's mean! They aren't actually concerned with the business moves, they just latch on to anything they think represents "resistance".

.
You are speculating wildly here, and it's clear that you don't really understand the drug development process.

They probably got good severance package to help tide them over as well as outplacement assistance.

The good news is they were laid off in a major business upswing and will all find good productive jobs. If they are Alzheimer's researchers with the right background, companies like Eli Lilly will seek them out.

If they were part of the business that is failing to produce, this is not a shocker. Pfizers margins are horrific compared to peers, they have shit pipeline and need to time to be able to merge and survive. And if they were in the retail division, they have to go so retail can be sold off.

But they aren't firing them for poor performance and bringing in others to replace them. They are doing away with research efforts on treatments for Alzheimer’s and Parkinsonism.

These researchers couldn't work on other areas?
