Bloomberg: Wal-Mart Raises Hourly Wage to $11 in Wake of Tax Overhaul

Quote:
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is boosting its starting hourly wage to $11 and delivering bonuses to employees, capitalizing on the U.S. tax overhaul to stay competitive in a tightening labor market.

The increase takes effect next month and will cost $300 million on top of annual wage hikes that were already planned, the world’s largest retailer said Thursday. The one-time bonus of up to $1,000 is based on seniority and will amount to an additional $400 million. The company is also expanding its maternity and parental leave policy and adding an adoption benefit...

This could kick people off the food stamp wagon. They will demand fewer hours to keep income low enough to reach the teat. Time to raise the food stamp minimums in line with raising wages. Everybody wins!!

But, wait! There's more.

Quote:

Waste Management said Wednesday that it will give $2,000 in special bonuses to about 34,000 employees.

The company said the cash bonuses will be given to its North American employees who are not on a bonus or sales incentive plan, including hourly and other employees.

The news comes after other companies have made similar announcements, citing the passage of tax legislation that slashes the corporate tax rate to 21 percent from 35 percent.

CEO Jim Fish said in a statement the company wanted to pass on the tax benefit to its employees.

I thought there was empirical evidence that tax cuts never trickle down. Huh.

It'd be good if this thread, or a new thread, were to compile all of these sorts of stories.

Admittedly i had my doubts, but it's good to see at least some companies increasing wages.

Same as I said in the other thread...

If these companies had real balls, and intentions of having the welfare Trump and the GOP is handing them "trickle down" to their employees....they would raise their employees PAYCHECKS, and make it PERMANENT. Not this window dressing of a one-time/temporary "bonus(es)"

You believe that the government allowing an individual or corporation to keep their own earned money is welfare?

I remember when Wal-Mart said the were raising the pay of their employees in 2015 and 2016, JPB started a thread on it and credited Obama.

When those tax cuts raise the deficit, while many companies are recording record profits and the economy has been doing well for quite a while?...yeah.
