Bloomberg: Wal-Mart Raises Hourly Wage to $11 in Wake of Tax Overhaul

Quote:
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is boosting its starting hourly wage to $11 and delivering bonuses to employees, capitalizing on the U.S. tax overhaul to stay competitive in a tightening labor market.

The increase takes effect next month and will cost $300 million on top of annual wage hikes that were already planned, the world’s largest retailer said Thursday. The one-time bonus of up to $1,000 is based on seniority and will amount to an additional $400 million. The company is also expanding its maternity and parental leave policy and adding an adoption benefit...

This is why many are giving bonuses instead of wage increases, that along with union contracts that make it difficult on short notice.

Walmart, which employs 2.2 million people around the world and is considered a bellwether for compensation in low-wage industries. The increased pay brings Walmart in line with some of its rivals in the retail industry, including Target, which raised its base pay to $11 last fall.

Although Walmart linked the moves to the tax cuts, it faces increased competition for the most qualified workers as the labor market tightens.
Looks like they would have had to do these things to stay competitive even without tax cuts.
Quote:
Walmart said Thursday it was still determining how much it would save as a result of the corporate tax cuts, although the savings are likely to be in the billions of dollars. Raising the starting wage would cost about $300 million and the bonuses will total about $400 million, Walmart said.

Veterans? What are you trying to say. I know plenty of veterans that are of working age and work hard. It's sad for those that have mental problems and need help and I believe this is getting better through the VA and is a focus under this administration. However, being a veteran doesn't make one immune from being lazy. Those the work or those that have medical or mental condition aren't lazy, those that don't work and have no medical or mental condition that prohibits them are lazy.
Parental policies? Like telling women what they can do with their bodies? Who people can have sex with and marry? Which party supports restrictive liquor laws (no Sunday sales)? Pot?

Don't turn a blind eye to those when leveling criticism about parental type policies.

And like I said, you don't know everyone's story for their situation. All those those things about verteans are true. Don't just assume because someone is working, or working a shitty job, they are lazy.

I looked for source you may agree with as many are out there. This is an NPR article and puts it at 10 million in late 2016, and these are working age MEN 24-54 so retirement is not an issue. As far as disability, around 40% are receiving some form of disability payment. This is the highest percentage of working age men receiving some form of disability payments in history. 20% more than in 1985. Many of these could supplement their disability with work income as well but choose to not look for additional work. Also, there is no monitoring those on disability to see if they are able to return to work.

Many believe the high number of men not working is due to low wages for unskilled labor with many of those jobs being filled by illegal immigration. The US is 25 out of 26 in industrial countries of men working in this age group. We have an issue, and unfortunately it hits minority populations the hardest.

The above being said, if you want to look at the left and the regulations and taxes they have put on behavior it far outpaces the conservatives belief in small government.

Also, I would never assume someone who is working is lazy.

I mentioned retirement, because some people do make enough money to retire early and that is mentioned in that article. Some people dropped out for other reasons, but there's no mention of how may able bodied people in need of work chose to not work and collect welfare.

I'm sure that it happens. I'm not sure that it's as huge of a problem as you seem to think it is.

I'm guessing out of the 10 million men 54 and under who have made enough money to retire is less than 1%.

on the bolded, you may think so if you were an African-American...
