Loyalty to team icons: Yea, or nay?

As a wholly hypothetical example, if you've got a player who's been with the team for a dozen or more years, has been a good team player, and goes to Hawaii virtually every year, should he be uncuttable?

Assume that he's highly productive, but somewhat more highly paid.

Only if there isn't another hypothetical player in the whole entire hypothetical world that could possibly play his position.

As a business owner, how would you deal with this kind of situation? You have an employee who has been with you for several years but business expenses have gone up so you can no longer afford to pay him what he has been making and still earn a profit on your business. Do you keep him even though it means losing money or do you show him the door (assuming he isn't interested in taking less money to allow you to still gain a profit) with a nice watch as a thank you gift?

Winning matters. Team icons don't. Welcome to the Not For Long league...

If the icon is still playing at a Pro Bowl level, and there isn't anyone else on the roster that is able to beat the icon for his position, then the team should find a way to keep him on the roster for a year or two until he retires (Will Shields).

If the icon's best days are well behind him, and you have a player you drafted a year or two ago that has shown enough to be given a shot as a starter, then there shouldn't be an issue with cutting the icon if he isn't ready to retire (Emmitt Smith).
