But playing in the NFL is similarly a rare place of employment that affords it the same leverage. You think your pass catching skills make you a one in a million? Try finding another job that pays you that well to catch passes.

And as fans, we need to choose our sides wisely. The owners and players are both greedy. But at least the owners have a secondary goal of long term success of the league. Success that is fueled by pleasing the customer with things like competitive balance brought about by salary cap and free agency rules. So while there may be a degree of unfairness, it's in the name of keeping all of us happy.

Good post. I'm not suggesting that we go back to the days of giving Jerry Jones a blank check. There has to be some checks and balances.

And while I agree with your second point, players asking for more money wouldn't ruin the league. What would ruin the league is shitty owners like Jeff Loria who believe no cap means giving him more license to cheapskate his payroll to turn a bigger profit. The system makes it impossible to oust him. And under a cap system, owners can undercut payroll because the system allows them to hide their finances so we can't see what players should actually deserve to earn. The owners can create a system that compensates players fairly while creating a fair salary cap. Those two things don't have to be mutually exclusive. But the system allows the owners an extraordinary amount of power to not do that. The best fix is for owners to open their books and create a cap based on what's really being earned. Until they do that, it's on the owners for underpaying players.

One more thing that I like about the way that they do it now is that since rookie salaries are slotted, there are virtually no more rookie holdouts. Bosa last year was the first rookie holdout since the new CBA. How many times did rookies holdout, missing valuable training camp and conditioning time. Those rookies usually had significantly less impactful rookie seasons due to the holdout. Several came in and got season ending injuries because of it. No. Please don't let things go back to the way they were before. Make those rookies earn the big bucks before they get paid and get them into camp on time.

Which is another sign of pure system abuse. I don't think college players should get a salary. But when tons of people are making a shitload of money off of player likenesses, and the ridiculous practice of cutting college players off from endorsement deals is nuts. It's one thing to stop athletes from making money. It's another when some snake in the back is extorting these kids for millions.

Are the draft picks even union members until they sign? I'd rather see the vets get the money rather than an unproven rookie.

Every time they negotiate the CBA, the players demand that the owners open up their books. They refuse to. All players, vets and rookies, can get a higher % cap if there were actual fair understanding of revenue. I can't even imagine the insane amount owners make in under the table incentives, especially from the city and state. Technically the NFL is cheating all players, vets and rookies, out of money. If All players could be paid a lot more if we ever knew what these owners were pocketing.
