Heads or Tails?.... HEADS!

I call that the positive side of the coin. It is now fashionable on this forum to call the Chiefs a complete failure and call for heads to roll. Coaches and players alike. I call for heads too.... Only on the coin. Here are the reasons:

1- The current Chiefs team is no better or worse than last year's edition that went undefeated in the first 9 games. The difference is mostly calls and bounces NOT going our way like they did last year. Sure you can point out to the turnover difference not being as good. But how many of last year's turnovers were actually caused by us? I say in this collision game more incidental turnovers occur than caused ones. So there's an element of luck involved in that aspect of the game also. And luck has been in short supply for the current edition of the Chiefs. That said, we are not a worse team than last year. Only the opposition improved themselves.

2- Bad calls by the officials (as I hinted above). Last night's 'no call' in the end zone at the end of the first half was a complete travesty and a clear example of what seems to have plagued the Chiefs this season. Last year, after the first few undefeated weeks, we received the benefit of the doubt from the officials. This year's record conditions the officials for the opposite. Gonzo was being held and mugged on at least every other play. Harrison(?) not only illegally pushed him around in the end zone on that particular call, but also shielded him from seeing the ball. Had that blatant interference been called the game could well have gone an entirely different way. "Every week we get a letter from the league saying oops we missed that call or another. Except it doesn't help." said a pissed off looking Trent Green on ESPN.

3- This record may actually be a blessing in disguise concerning the long-term plans of the Chiefs. We may very well end up in one of those rare situations (that other teams seem to enjoy, but never us) when we take a good team to an off-season in which we will draft high (Carl Peterson notwithstanding). We have not been blown out of the water in ANY game and could have won almost all of them with the right luck. We do have a good (not great) team. Drafting high and next year's easier schedule should make the '05 season quite interesting. Hopefully a lesson was learned about not staying pat in the FA market when we have the cap money. I simply do not subscribe to this new wave of "let's get rid of everybody" that dominates this forum these days. I don't think our overall defensive personnel is that bad. Some good guys are playing poorly simply because a few others simply suck. It affects the scheme and the play of everyone on the 'D.'

Disclaimer- For this optimism to prove true the following conditions need to be satisfied:

1- Priest will not retire (And hopefully Blaylock will re-sign).
2- Roaf will not retire and will stay reasonably at his current quality.
3- An impact receiver, a quality DE and a shut down Cb will come our way through draft, free agency and the one-a-year pleasant surprises. I actually think our LBs will play better next year. In Gun I trust.
4- Save for getting rid of a couple of defensive position coaches there would be continuity in the system and the coaching staff. Keep our O-line coach at all costs!
5- CP will draft them based on the combine reports, not his stubbornness.

Wow!... I admit, that's a lot of qualifications. But hey, I'm an optimist. Thoughts?

The refs just called you for coin interference. They're taking the coin.

That said, I agree with your last point that maybe we'll come back strong next year with a top-notch rookie at a key position. I want Gunther to start auditioning players for next year now, too. Harts at FS, Battle at the nickel, Fox at LB, Wilkerson at LDE, etc.

I also would like Gunther to have a say on who we hire to replace a couple of our defensive position coaches too.

Exactly. That was bogus.

I don't want to get into 'blame the coach' mode on this, but I couldn't believe that they ever hired Giunta. That was a huge mistake from Day One, just like hiring Robin son was a huge mistake from Day One.

I know that there's a social element in coaching about hiring people you know and like, but at the same time I'm constantly amazed how people with dismal, grim records of abject, repeated failure always manage to get new jobs in this league. I'm not talking about just the Chiefs, but about all teams.

Egad. I've become as predictable as the Chiefs' blitz schemes.

That's not true; you are much more fun to watch....and much more effective than any Chief's blitz.
