Looking ahead...to next year big picture wise.

It is my opinion that this year no team from the AFC West will do anything of signifigance in the post season. I didn't really make this thread to argue about this point but either way you slice it the AFC West is not the tough division it used to be. It seems like for a long time our division was generally one of the toughest in the NFL year after year.

As soft as I think the AFC West is this year I think it is going to be good next year. Very good. I think every single team will improve to become much better teams then they are this year. San Diego will be very good next year. I think they will get knocked off in the playoffs but the things they have done this year will be quite a motivator to take care of the little things in the offseason and come out next year not with confidence. Denver is a few moves away from putting together a team that is consistant enough to win the whole year through. I believe the Chiefs will do some good things this offseason to become a force in this league once again. The Raiders are the only team that I think could make this theory of mine untrue. They show some really good flashes at times but then they turn around and get beat by us and then get pounded by the Falcons. They have impressive young talent in ket positions but I just cab't see them building an offense around Kerry Collins.

What are your thoughts when you look at this season and think about next season...

Larry Johnson - 3,000 yards and 50 TDs. DV loses his bet with CP and is forced to wear a diaper the last half of the season.

Next year I see the Broncos *

(* Violated the salary cap during their championship seasons) and Chiefs in a dogfight for the AFC West. Oakland and San Diego will be mediocre.

Here are my reasons:

KC's offense has about a one year window after this season in which they will still be potent. They are getting old...Raideresque old. And Vermeil is leaving after next year, most likely taking Green, Roaf, Kennison, Holmes and others with him. But they still have one more year.

Defensively, there is NO way KC will stand pat after what happened this year. I believe they will bring in quality free agents to upgrade the D, and hopefully at least one stud in the draft. With the development of Jared Allen, Scott Fujita and maybe a couple players like Battle or Harts (hell maybe even Kawika? We can dream), we will be good enough IMO.

The Donks, despite my hatred of them, have a pretty good young corps. Their D lacks a pass rush. A healthy Pryce for 16 games gives them that and who knows what they add on the D-Line. Offensively they have a big decision with Plummer's bonus, but I believe he will still be a Bronco next year. Their receiving corps is rock solid and Tatum Bell looks like another Clinton Portis. What they REALLY need is a couple good offensive linemen. Tony Jones, their former allpro left tackle is a free agent. I believe Denver will sign him.

Oakland sucked this year, but they've shown improvement in the second half. I still think their D sucks and they have no running game. But their D will improve IMO, but not enough to make them any better than 8-8.

San Diego will be the real disappointment. Brees is headed elsewhere. Marty starts Rivers and you get Grbac vs Gannon Part Duex. Mediocre Chargers look to the future and hope Rivers develops.

KC wins the division if they bring in the right guys on D. Denver wins the division if KC stands pat again.

I don't know, I guess I need to see if Denver makes the playoffs and how Denver and SD do if/when they get there. San Diego definitely has so much wiggle room to do whatever they want it's ridiculous. They have to make a decision on Rivers/Brees, if it's Rivers they're going the Carson Palmer route and I'd expect they'd come back to earth a bit. We'll see how Brees responds to his magical year this year... hopefully he comes back to earth a little too, I wouldn't bank on it though. They might be a good team again, and I know I get on people for saying the schedule isn't that different among teams, but maybe the fact that their two "different" games are going to be Indy and Pittsburgh will make a difference.

Denver is completely up in the air to me... a lot is going to depend on what happens these last three weeks. What's Shanahan going to do? Are they going to fish or cut bait with Plummer? Where are they going to find the pass rush? It's kind of weird, because I honestly had no clue what to expect of them coming into this season, and you know, after 14 weeks, I still have absolutely no idea what to expect out of them except that they have the ability to run the ball well, which is nothing new.

I don't know about Oakland. Chris Mortensen was telling a story about this weekend where a bunch of Raiders players were supposed to have some event at a popular Atlanta nightclub... and according to Mort the players all made curfew but who knows if they snuck out or what they did before curfew, and if they did anything there's nothing the coaching staff can do about it. Apparently the coaches have resigned to the fact that they could fine the players all the money they wanted and when Al Davis prints off the paychecks he's not taking away a single cent. The inmates are running the asylum and I don't know how it can get better.

For the Chiefs, it's simple, find 11 guys who can play defense. Another WR would be nice, as would a punter possibly, but find 11 guys who can play defense. Bob Gretz on the postgame tonight that there's only three weeks left, but there is going to be no break for Gunther because you can be sure he is going to waste no time watching film and going to work finding whoever he can wherever he can to play in his defense.

Maybe... I don't know, if wabbit over at the Mane is right (which I have no idea) and Shanahan basically put Plummer on a very restricted leash in the 4th quarter yesterday, I can't imagine Shanny having the tolerance to stick with him.

6 million dollar bonus.

He's going to have to restructure. I think he will.

I don't think Plummer is good enough to take that team wear they want to be. He just does not get it done when you need him to. He has some unique skills that make him an exciting player to watch but he is just not good enough to live up to what that fan base expect of him. He would need an amazing cast of support players on offense to make up for his spurts of being average at best and sometimes awful. Denver's offense has some great players but not enough. The more that they have to rely on him to take their team to the next level the worse off they are.

If they can get a pass rush and a top notch running game going, Plummer is more than capable.

If they get Tony Jones, look out.

San diego is winning in large part because they are getting a lot of "bounces" going their way this year, and even their players have admitted that. We've seen plenty of that happen to us in 1995 and 1997 and 2003. So I think the law of averages will bring San Diego back to earth next year, like it did for us in 1996, 1998, and 2004.

The good news for the Chargers though is that first rounder they got from the Giants in the Manning trade...

I think the road to the Super Bowl will still go through Foxboro.

KC will win it all next year. Trust me.

San Diego will lose Dree Brees' magical and inspiring performance this year for they'll want to start their rookie QB which ultimately will be a big mistake. However, knowing Shottenheimer- he'll want the "proven" Brees. But, I believe S.D. will trade Brees away in the offseason. They'll get the tough schedule next year, and I believe that schedule will do to them, what it did to us.

Denver will be looking at coaching changes- possibly even Shanny. Shanny comes from the Bill Walsh era of "...ten years is long enough at any one place..." style of coaching. I honestly believe Denver will be seeing some coaching changes in the offseason.

Oakland - well, they're just plain sad. They'll be in everyone's rearview mirror for a long time.

KC will get a softer schedule. We lost a few close games that we could easily be 8-5 instead of 5-8 right now. As bad as our defense is- there is only one way to go, and that is UP for that defense. A lot of the younger guys are getting some quality playing time in that scheme, and I think with a good draft and some free agent pick ups and another season under Gunther- the D will be much more improved...

I think thats true and thats is why I predict their early exit. But even with an early exit they have a lot of confidence rolling into next season.

It's very homer-ish, but I'd agree except I'm thinkin' Shanny will get ONE more year....I expect next year to be the end of the Vermiel era in KC too, regardless of what happens.
