George Carlin = quitter

Quote:
Carlin Enters Rehab

1 hour, 8 minutes ago

By Marcus Errico

George Carlin's New Year's resolution is to get sober.

The dirty-word-dispensing funnyman announced Monday that he was voluntarily entering a treatment program to battle his growing abuse of booze and painkillers.

Or as he put it: "I'm going into rehab because I use too much wine and Vicodin. No one told me I needed this; I recognized the problem and took the step myself.

"My levels of use are nowhere near the worst you hear about these days; I could easily have continued functioning at a good levelfor awhile. But my use would have progressed, I would have been in deeper trouble, and I didnt want to tolerate that.

I've never been in rehab before and I know it isn't easy, but I'm highly motivated, and will do whatever's needed.

Carlin, 67, did not specify how long he intended to remain in rehab--a typical stint is around a month--or where he would receive his treatment.

"When I get out, I will take a little time for myself before resuming my schedule," Carlin said. "Thanks. See ya soon."

Carlin has cleared his calendar and currently has no concert dates listed on his Website, georgecarlin.com. He had been making the rounds in theaters and bookstores in recent weeks to pimp his latest boundary-pushing book, When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?, and was planning his usual 12-week run at Las Vegas' MGM Grand.

Earlier this year, he generated headlines when Wal-Mart declined to stock Pork Chop. Despite the mini-controversy, the title did manage to make the upper echelon of the New York Times bestseller list.

Carlin, who most recently appeared in the box-office bomb Jersey Girl, also recently voiced a part in Happily N'Ever After, an animated retelling of the Grimm fairy tales featuring the voices of Sarah Michelle Geller, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sigourney Weaver due out next year.

Very few are as funny as that guy... Good luck in rehab and great job noticing that you had a problem and being self motivated enough to not let it ruin you first...

What a crock. If he wants to quit, he should just quit. He's probably avoiding some undisclosed blast of shit from somewhere by coming public with it. I don't buy into it for a second. And why announce it to the world? That's just dumb.

I've known lots of people who were addicted to various things who went to rehab (either voluntarily or non-voluntarily). All of them went right back to their vice/vices of choice as soon as they got out. I always found my druggie friends' "when I was in rehab" stories highly entertaining when we were sitting around doing coke.

You quit when YOU are ready to quit. Not before.
