Three Chiefs Named to USA Today's All-Joe Team

Whoopee!!!

http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2005/01...s_alljoe_team/

USA Today announced on Wednesday that three members of the Kansas City Chiefs have been named to their All-Joe Team; C Casey Wiegmann, DE Jared Allen and long snapper Kendall Gammon. The All-Joe Team takes its name from former Chiefs DT Joe Phillips who played 14 seasons for Kansas City, San Diego and Minnesota before retiring in ‘99. According to USA Today’s Larry Weisman, the All-Joe Team is represented by “hard-working, overlooked, underappreciated player(s) who do the dirty work simply because that’s (their) lot in life.”

Wiegmann (6-2, 285) started all 16 games for the Chiefs in 2004, anchoring one of the NFL’s top offensive lines. Behind Wiegmann and company, Kansas City led the league with 6,695 total yards and finished second in scoring with an average of 30.2 points per game. Wiegmann has started 63 consecutive games for the Chiefs.

A native of Parkersburg, Iowa, Wiegmann has spent time with Indianapolis, N.Y. Jets, Chicago and Kansas City over his nine-year career. An All-Big Ten honorable mention selection as a senior at Iowa, Wiegmann started 27 career games for the Hawkeyes.

Gammon (6-4, 255) has appeared in every game of his professional career, a string of 208 consecutive games over the past 13 seasons. That ranks as the longest active streak in the league among non-kickers. The accomplished long snapper has appeared in 80 games over five seasons with the Chiefs after spending four seasons in both Pittsburgh (’92-95) and New Orleans (’96-’99). Gammon, who has seen duty in eight postseason games including Super Bowl XXX while with Pittsburgh.

A product of Pittsburg State, Gammon started 41 games for the Gorillas at both tackle and guard. A three-time All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association selection, the Rose Hill, Kansas native helped Pittsburg State to the ‘91 NCAA Division II National Championship.

Allen (6-6, 265) started the final 10 games of the season at right defensive end for the Chiefs. Kansas City’s Mack Lee Hill award recipient for rookie of the year, Allen appeared in 15 total games during his rookie campaign collecting 39 tackles, including three for a loss, as well as a team-high 9.0 sacks and 27 QB pressures. Allen’s sack total led all NFL rookies and came just one shy of the club’s rookie record of 10.0 set by the late Derrick Thomas in ‘89.

A native of Los Gatos, California, Allen arrived in Kansas City as a fourth-round draft choice (126th overall) in 2004. The recipient of the Buck Buchanan Award in 2003 as the premier defensive player in NCAA Division I-AA, Allen appeared in 41 games (33 starts) at Idaho State. The 2003 All-America selection collected 250 tackles, 73.0 tackles for loss and 38.5 sacks while adding seven fumble recoveries, 13 fumbles forced, 26 passes defensed, three INTs and a blocked field goal.

Props to Kendall Gammon, he deserves so much more credit than he gets. He makes us forget that Jared Allen even has the ability to be a long-snapper, and really, it's not like any other position. As long as he can hold off the contact, really how much longer could he long snap for us? I wonder if he could do it into his 40's...

I had forgotten that before the season started, there were many of us wanting to keep Allen around mainly because of the long-snapping abilities, (and his awesome dance moves).

Until Jared Allen gets it done. Kendall Gammon is really a waste of a roster spot, since he can do nothing more than long snap.

Yeah, I was kinda leaning toward making Allen the long snapper so we could bring in a kickoff specalist, but really, Kendall is darn near perfect, he really does his job better than anyone else on the team. If that wasn't the case he probably would be a waste of a roster spot, but you can't argue with perfection.

That list is completely bogus without Brian Waters on it.

If Darryl Green and Bruce Matthews can play into their 40's with contact, Gammon should be able to play into his 50's. But, considering veteran minimum salaries, I wonder how much longer a team will carry him with that price tag.....

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. He's not really much of a blocker or coverage guy anyway, and while I'm no expert at it you'd think long snapping a football is a skill you could stay sharp in for a long time... even if his skills eroded a little he'd be better than most. He could be doing this at 45, 46 (or more) years old as long as people don't start trying to pick him off... and don't hire a coach that thinks a snapper like him is not worth a roster spot.

I love KG, he is one of the few on this team that you don't have to worry about during game day screwing up. That IMO, makes him invaluable.

Yeah, I definitely agree. The value of a roster spot is more than worth perfect snaps on every special teams play.
