LCD Monitirs

I've been shopping for a new LCD monitor and I was hoping that you idiots could give me some advise.

I would like to keep it under $275 and I've been using New Egg to compare prices but I'm just not sure about the brands.

What is the ideal Brightness, Contract and Response Time? What are some other options that I might want to target? Does DVI make that big of a difference?

Thanks in advance.

If you have a video card with DVI output, it makes a BIG difference.

DVI it is then.

That seems to limit the choices.

Will you be using it for Gaming or Videos? If not you may want to consider geting a cheap 19" for around $300 or so.

unless something has change lately (i haven't checked recently) you just don't get comparable gaming performance with an LCD versus a CRT.

CRT alot bigger and alot better for half the price of a LCD with not quite the performance.

just my 2 cents

I agree with that but the new desk that the wife bought doesn't accomodate a CRT so the LCD is more for decor purposes and I want to make sure that it's not total crap.

How many frames per second do you want to be able to see?

40? 60? 80?

With LCD's the ms response will tell you how many frames the screen is capable of per second.

The formula is 1 second to milliseconds which is 1000 milliseconds. Then divide it by the response time.

1000ms / 25 ms = 40 frames per second
1000ms / 16 ms = 62.5 frames per second

for a real gaming LCD you prolly need at most 16ms ... prolly 12ms if not 8ms.

might check this one out:

The Samsung is nice but I want the DVI input. The ViewSonic is a bit more than I want to pay.

I take that these are two brands that I should keep my eye on?

they are solid brands ... i dont pimp any particular one. i'm a little off-the-market right now so i'm not up on alot of them.

that viewsonic has a 8ms response time which is really good. Maybe people ignore the viewsonic brand but i like it.

you might following this link where you can compare several different one and see what's what.

here's a monitor review article with good information

apparently response time is measure in various ways and may take more to judge.

The Samsung model lazarus refered to is really nice. Even without the DVI imput it has a great color contrast and brightness. It will probably cost another $75 or so to find something that nice with a DVI imput.

Id keep looking around but if you cant find something in that range with a DVI imput id seriously consider the Sansung.
