Anyone recently been to Amsterdam/Rotterdam?

I'm curious, only because I have to go over there in about 3 weeks for a business deal I'm doing.

Couple of questions:

1. Best Airlines to take
2. Decent places to stay
3. What to do....other than the hash bars

Thanks.

1. Any that will get you there, but it is a long flight. If you can, step up to business class.

2. If you find one, let em know.

3. hehehehe Lots of good "window shopping" over there.

The food is very bland over there. You will be Jones'n for a good hamburger after 3 weeks. You should have a good time though.

Re: Flight
I'm used to long flights. The flight from Chicago to Tokyo is like 12 hours - so 8-9 hours won't be a problem (although I'm sure I'll be travelling coach)

Re: Places to stay
Really? That bad, huh. Well, I'm probably going to be in Rotterdam most of the time, so I'll probably stay in the Downtown area

I fn hate bland food. I don't have a problem eating strange local delicacies, but it should at least have some flavor. Thanks for the reply.

Been there in the last few years. Here's my advice: travel. Many different countries/cultures within easy distance of Amsterdam. And with the train system, you never have to rent a car. Although driving in Europe is often part of the adventure.

Great thing about the Netherlands, though, is they speak English to you without really resenting you for it.

I think Northwest's partner - KLA flies in and out of there all the time.

Are you a Queens Day Traveler?

Northwest, unless a aging DC-10 with small seats is your type of planeI say go for it. You will probaly find more deals with Northwest than anyone else. Minneapolis is their major hub coming from Kansas, which is fantastic. Minneapolis airport is a breeze going out and coming back. Stick with Northwest(operated by KLM) if going that route.

Never flown Delta but I have heard good and bad things about them. Hartsfield in Atlanta sucks going out and coming back in though.

Continental and U.S. Airways I have heard good and bad things about. I have no clue about United other than you have to deal with Dulles Int'l. Bleh.

How long is your stay? Apts in the Dam are on par as far as pricing goes. Do you care if it is busy at night? Or are you looking for something alittle calmer? Does it matter if you have your own shitter? Do you smoke? Alot of questions you need to take into account. Hotel rooms you have remember are by American standards extremely small. Apts are the way to go IMO. Check www.citymundo.com to get a idea of what I mean.

As far as what to do. There is the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Artis Zoo, Anne Frank House, rembrandt House, Dutch Resistance Museum, Concertgebouw(if you are into the arts), Sex Museum, Cannabis Museum, many churches you can visit. But if you are there for Queen's day, trust me, you won't find any problem finding anything to do. It is a city wide gay festival.

Times have changed. You find more diverse types of food now.

No problems finding taste worthy food.

I'll only be there for a week. And yes, I'd prefer my own shitter, and I'm a non-smoker. Do the hotels suck that bad. I mean, I've traveled in Hanoi on business and stayed in a couple of great hotels. Hmmmm. I'll be there with two of my business partners, so we'll be looking to have a good time as well.

Thanks for the info, especially the Northwest tip. I used to fly them direct to Beijing via Detroit and their airplanes were great. Agreed on the DC 10. Those planes blow. Appreciate the details.

I would hope so. Every meal I had over there had zero flavor.

Check the Leidseplein area. De Pijp is good, maybe a little far out than what you prefer. Just remember, you are only one tram ride away from anything. Utilize the tram. I can't stress that enough, cab fares are a killer in the Dam. Only positive I can see about cabs in the Dam is coming and going to Schipol. Other than that trams will take you close to anywhere you need to go. You have a choice of tram tickets, I would stay away from the hassle of figuring out how many zones you need to stamp on a strippenkaart, go for the 72 Uurskaart. That will allow to travel on the tram in Amsterdam for 72hrs from the time the ticket is stamped on your first ride. To get a ticket the easiest way is to go to Centraal Station VVV office and ask for a 72 Uurskaart. Price is about 15E.

I would go with the Apt idea, if it's not too late. It's not that the hotels are bad. But, who wants to stay in a hotel when you can have an apt for the same price. That is my opinion of course. Some differ. The breakfast at most hotels(some don't have breakfast) consist of the regular Dutch breakfast of cold cuts, bread, cheese, jams, hard boiled eggs, etc. A hot breakfast is not what you will get in a hotel, for free.

Dutch food does suck for the most part. I admit I love frites with the mayonaise. Ummm, large cone please.

There are plenty of places to eat there now. Wilma and Alberts in Haarlem cooks a kangaroo steak that literally melts in your mouth. Gauchos makes a good steak. There are alot of Argentina Grills, Italian Ristorantes, Falafels, you name it they have it. The American food contribution is McDonalds, Burger King, and Sbarro pizza. And that just seems weird to go all the way to Holland for McDonalds and Burger King. Not to mention the pay toilets in them, those bastards. Atleast on the weekends the city sticks out the pissoirs.

I was in Amsterdam 3-4 years ago. Had a great time. The food was excellent. Not the netherland food, but they had so many restaurants of different types: thai, italian, greek, indian, mexican, and on and on. Every restaurant I went to was great except the one time we tried a netherland-style restaurant.

Things to do other than hash/red-light are the van gogh musem, rembrandt's house, rijks (sp?) museum, anne frank house. You can also go outside the city some and see windmills. You can go to edam where they make cheese, to heinekin factory, etc. There's much to do.

Also, when you're there, you must get ice cream from Australian! It is out of this world. http://www.australianhomemade.nl/

Went there in college at age 21 with 5 friends.

All I remember is that pot is legal, the locals are friendly and a vision or blurry memory of feeding pigeons pain killers while shrooming on a bench.

Hope that helps!

Pot is not legal. Common misperception about the Netherlands.

The correct term would be tolerated. In other words the police don't see a need to hunt down every person that has a gram in his pocket.
A licensed and tax paying cafe can sell it but they must meet certain restrictions. And they can be strict. Like any customer found in the establishment with hard drugs. Removal of their license. Over the 500g on hand per cafe limit at any given time. Same thing, license gone. Selling of more than 5g per sale, license gone. If you are caught smuggling or growing you are going to jail.
