Cleveland wants to trade down

Third pick for sale…

New Cleveland G.M. Phil Savage left no doubt at the Browns’ pre-draft news conference yesterday that the team would very much like to move down from the 3rd spot in next weekend’s draft. Savage indicated that over the next couple of days he will be actively calling other teams around the league looking for a trading partner. In fact, according to Savage, the Browns will be willing to move fairly ‘deep’ into the opening round if the right offer came along.

Savage also indicated that the Browns might also be interested in moving their #2, the 34th overall, to a team looking to move up to grab a first-round quality player who slipped out of the opening round. And while they didn’t quite come out and say it publicly, the Browns are downplaying the likelihood that they would take a QB with the #3 pick overall if they weren’t able to swing a deal to move down. Savage also downplayed the fact that the Browns cancelled a pre-draft visit from Michigan WR Braylon Edwards, likely the top-rated player to be available were the team to stay at #3 citing a ‘scheduling conflict.’ According to Savage, the Browns already know all they need to about Edwards.

The Browns, though, will be meeting with Wisconsin DE Erasmus James this week, along with Arkansas QB-turned-WR Matt Jones and Akron QB Charlie Frye. The Browns, who also helped run Frye’s on-campus workout late last month, have shown a lot of interest in Frye who could very well still be on the board when they make their second round selection. Meanwhile, Savage appeared to downplay the likelihood that the Browns would select a QB like Alex Smith of Utah if they stayed at the 3rd pick. Savage hedged, saying that ‘for every Peyton Manning, there’s a Ryan Leaf.’ Savage also noted that new head coach Romeo Crennell was part of an organization which won three of the last four Super Bowls with a 6th round pick at the helm.

Gee, if only we knew of a team that had multiple picks to deal with this year?

Just for fun, who would you pick if you had the third pick, assuming KC moved up this year?

Is that too high for D. Johnson?

I thought Alex Smith would have been a good pick for them. He's only 20 years old and could be their QB for a LONG time. I think they think they can still get him and pick up some additional picks as well.

I'd take Johnson with any pick.. personally he reminds of Derrick Thomas.. I think hed make a huge impact on this D..He and Bell would be the perfect combo for years following this year.. and get surtain...I can see it now....1990's defense all over again..

If the Chiefs had the #1 pick overall.. it should be Derrick Johnson... and I really would like to see them make some sort of move up the board to get him... give up this years first and next years 3rd and 4th or something... get him if you can!

Moving into the top 5 on draft day comes with a steep price, especially if we moved up from 15.

If we move up, I hope it's no higher than Washington's slot at #9.

I think each of those picking 1-5 would like to trade down for a bounty of picks...

Not worth the price in this draft.

no ****in' way I'd pick any defensive player OTHER than antrel rolle with a top five pick... now, 6-10, sure, I'd pick d. johnson... but any 'backer not named lavar arrington in the last couple of years is a waste of top five pick

-EB-...I'm sure there's an exception to that rule, but I can't think of it

3rd pick is worthless this year unless you want Edwards. The best spot to be in would 6-10 for this draft.

Why does everyone need LB Johnson so much ?

The experts say he is not physical ?

Then why is he a top 10 pick ?

That's a very good question.

They do say he's a sure tackler, but I want LBs that knock your teeth out.

Then why do so many scouting reports say that he's not a prototypical physical LB?
