At what age is a typical NFL player at the height of his career?

I know that it may be different for different positions. Give me your best take on the leaguewide average.

The only position where this may not apply is QB.

I debated between 27 and 26, but chose 26.

26 - 28 are the three prime years, imo.

I agree with 26-28, I went with the low end of the scale because running backs will drag down any scale.

If the player is good, then he will get better at a drastic rate from age 22 to 26. From there they usually will get just a little bit better year to year until they reach 29 or 30 (if they don't get hurt). After that, they usually will start to decline as their own bodies wear down.

I voted 29, right before the decline...

I've read a few articles where studies have said 28 was where most players peak physically. But then different positions have different prime years. For a QB, Most typically have their best years in their early 30's. Because their on top of their game mentally. And then there's guys like Payton Manning who has arrived mentally prepared for the Pro game from Day 1. If he survives the beatings he'll take in the next few years and stays relatively healthy, Manning will own practically all the records in the books.

28. By then you're a 6 year vet and don't screw up too often in terms of making blatant mental errors, but you're still not over the hill physically.

30 is usually when the decline in a player's game starts to become really noticeable.

Average age of the AFC probowlers is 28.5 years.

Offense was 29 years and defense was 28 years.

Before I did the statistics I said 31. Some of this was based on what I have seen in cycling where the atheletes peak in their late 20's. I was really over valuing the effect of experience.

depends on the player ... at some point their brains catch up to their body and they peak.
