CHIEFS PLAYERS RANK AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS IN NFL EUROPE

CHIEFS PLAYERS RANK AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS IN NFL EUROPE
May 05, 2005, 4:14:36 AM

The Chiefs hosted a rookie camp last weekend to gain a glimpse of potential future performers for Kansas City. While watching tapes of the activity at the practice facility, the coaches also found time to view four NFL Europe games that featured Chiefs in leading roles. Kansas City allocated 13 players to NFL Europe this spring as they continue to use the league to develop future players. Included in that group are four players who rank among the league leaders.

RB McKenzie Smith has played in five games (three starts) for Amsterdam, splitting time with Tennessee RB Jarrett Payton. Smith ranks second in the league with 68 carries for 355 yards (5.2 avg.) with two scores. He carried the ball 17 times for 133 yards (7.8 avg.) with a 56-yard touchdown run vs. Berlin (4/16). Smith has accumulated 390 total yards from scrimmage in 2005, ranking third in the league.

A quick look at the Admirals defensive sheet shows yet another Chiefs player at the top of the page. S Scott Connot has started all five games at safety for Amsterdam, leading the club with 32 tackles (28 solo) and four passes defensed. He led the club with seven tackles, one pass defensed and a fumble recovery last week at Berlin (4/30).

“He is making plays and tackling very well,” commented Kansas City defensive backs coach Peter Giunta. “He is making plays on deep balls. I want to see him get his hands on a few more interceptions. He is making very good progress.”

WR Jeris McIntyre has seen duty in five games (one start) for the Rhein Fire, catching 13 passes for 294 yards (22.6 avg.) with a touchdown. He leads the league with a 22.6 yards per catch average and stands third in the league with 294 receiving yards. McIntyre has also returned five kickoffs for 89 yards (17.8 avg.) for the Fire. He caught six passes for a league-high 154 yards (25.7 avg.) at Hamburg (4/16).

The Berlin Thunder are first in the league standings with a 4-1 record thanks in large part to Kansas City LB Rich Scanlon. He is pacing the squad the 47 tackles (35 solo), two passes defensed and an interception for 49 yards. The Syracuse product continued his dominance last week, posting a team-high 15 tackles vs. Amsterdam (4/30).

NFL Europe League clubs play a 10-game regular season schedule in 2005. The top two teams in the standings will play for the league championship in World Bowl XIII, Saturday, June 11th at LTU Arena in Düsseldorf, Germany.

For Kansas City, the NFLEL has served as a springboard to NFL success for a number of players, including Pro Bowlers WR Dante Hall (Scotland, 2001), LB Gary Stills (Frankfurt, 2001) and G Brian Waters (Berlin, 2000), as well as impact players such as LB Mike Maslowski (Barcelona, 1999).

Well, it is nice that we have some talent actually playing well over there, it seemed for a while there most of the players we sent were not even making the squad.

Scanlon is called D-Day in Europe....women throw their daughters at him - even from balconies - during the many parades held to honor him.

I thought the same thing, but since it's of the Chiefs website, I figured I'd just go with it.

Gee, how's the great Eric Crouch doing? Think he brought his mom with him over there to support him through it all?

I mentioned that if Rich didn't lead the league in tackles, he would be top 5. All of this long before ever being sent over there and winning the starting MLB position.

It's good to see others in the league doing well. BTW, Connot is 2nd in the league ,total tackles.

It's great that Scanlon is doing well. Hopefully he can be a much needed contributor on special teams.

I don't out too much stock in it though. He's doing it against less than NFL talent, and the fact remains that someone is going to get a lot of tackles on every team in every football league in the world. Being the shiniest turd in the pile doesn't necessarily mean you're not a turd.

It's too bad NFLE doesn't keep tackles stats. I'd like to see who led the league the last few years, and how they've done in the NFL since.

That is one thing that should be improved is the special teams. Within the addition of the punter and the lb's that are going to be relegated to ST's duty, it should be greatly improved...

Maybe if you choose to ignore that Hall's "escort" now plays for the Jets.

Yea, the same can be said for rookies coming out of college.

The guy is gaining "real world" experience on the football field- if anything, he's elevating his confidence and if he brings that confidence to KC in addition to his experience- he will then play in the NFL- maybe not as an immediate starter, but as a contributor.
