You can't get that rate off the street. The hotel sends lodging.com a $30 check for the referral. They screwed up and charged you, thereby tipping you off.

Yep.
All those sites always seem $5 - $30 higher than if you check prices on the hotel, air, or car rental website or call directly. |

I just booked a 18 day trip in 4 different cities and used 3 different websites. You have to spend some time to look around the net for the best deal. You will save alot of money using your time to surf the best deals.
I use: Expedia.com Hotwire.com Travelocity.com But I also check the "official" sites of the hotels. I've got better deals there before.

On weekends larger hotels often save large blocks of rooms for weddings or similar events. It always pay to bluff when you call and say you're coming into town for a wedding and were told they have rooms at a discount. The people getting married are too busy taking care of the reception hall, limo, flowers, church, etc., they'll never check the hotel list to see who's staying and who's not.

I've only used Priceline a couple of times, but with great success.
I've stayed at both the Hyatt Regency and Hotel Phillips for $55/night, plus tax and small service fee. The Hotel Phillips stay was for the minicamp a couple of weeks ago and the total came to $73/night. It's a four star hotel in the financial district and I would guess the cost is normally much higher. |

On the advice of a fellow planeteer, I tried Priceline for a room in KC Sept 30 through Oct 3. I bid $50 for a four star in Country Club Plaza or Downtown/Crown Center. They made you check two areas among quite a few. $50 was rejected. You have to wait 72 hours after your bid is rejected. After 72 hours I bid $55 dollars. It was rejected, but they said if you raise it $15 to $70 your bid will be accepted. I figured what the hell. I got two rooms for $70 each for 3 nights at the Westin Crown Center. I think I got a good deal, but we will see.
