K.C. Chiefs Training Camp Daily Updates

Humidity and heat saturated the air as morning practice commenced. It was 80 degrees and cloudy with a wind from the northeast at 7 m.p.h. The dew point was a muggy 67 degrees, but it didn't hinder fans from coming out for Seniors Day. Thirty-two seniors participated in event and relished the free coffee, the complimentary gifts and a raffle drawing for Chiefs apparel. The total fan count today was estimated around 120.

Offense

Kevin Sampson has the edge so far in locking down the right tackle, Coach Dick Vermeil told the media at his morning press conference."Well, he's got a good lead, you know he's a fighter. He's a tough guy, and every day he's challenged by Eric Hicks, because Erik Hicks came to go to work. You talk about a journeyman work man. So, that means the guy at right tackle leaves every day with a head ache. And that's out of respect for Erik Hicks . That's why he's a hell of a football player and he makes that right tackle a better player, and he also helps us define if the player can play or not."

The wide receiver battle is still continuing, "Is very intense, very competitive. Every day I see somebody do something real well, that I didn't see him do yesterday. It's the best situation we've been confronted with since I've been here. When I compare it to the first year here to now it's different then night and day. I don't know if anyone is going to go to the Pro Bowl or anything like that, but we got guys who can make plays," says Vermeil.

The first series of 11-on-11's this morning was a two-minute drill. In the first play, quarterback Todd Collins threw a deep pass to wide receiver Dante Hall for a 25-yard catch in the end zone for the first touch down of the drill. Quarterback Damon Huard handed off the ball to wide receiver John Booth who ran into the sidelines to stop the clock. Huard then hit Booth with a short seven-yard pass. At a 1:53 running back Ronnie Cruz took a handoff from Huard. Huard then passed the ball to Booth who went out of bounds to stop the clock. Huard then hit wide receiver Jeris McIntyre with a short pass, and McIntyre ran out of bounds to stop the clock. At 1:18, Huard threw an incomplete throw, which hit one hand of wide receiver Craphonso Thorpe and then fell to the ground. The next two plays were incomplete by Huard. Quarterback Todd Collins hit running back Dee Brown with a 10-yard pass, who ran out of bounds to stop the clock. Collins then passed to wide receiver Samie Parker for a gain of 11-yards. With :54 remaining Collins passed the ball to wide receiver Eddie Kennison for a 10-yard gain. Brown took a hand off from Collins for a gain of six-yards. The next two plays were incomplete. With :09 remaining Collins hit wide receiver Chris Horn for a touchdown. After the play Offensive Coordinator Al Saunders ran up to Chris Horn and Eddie Kennison to give them knuckles in congratulations.

Running back Dee Brown saw numerous snaps today due to the absence of Samkon Gado, Priest Holmes, and Larry Johnson. In the second series of 11-on-11s Brown took five hand-offs out of 14. Brown took a hand off from quarterback James Kilian for a great run of 15-yards up the middle.

In the final series of 11-on-11s quarterback Todd Collins had four incomplete passes . Running back Dee Brown took four hand offs from Collins. Running back Dante Hall took one hand off also.

Quarterback Damon Huard was one of three in the final series. Fullback Robert Holcombe received one hand off, wide receiver John Booth took a hand off and gained 15 yards, and running back Ronnie Cruz caught one for 10-yards, and another pass was dropped, and one was uncatchable.

In the final series of 11-on-11s quarterback James Kilian. Fullback Robert Holcombe took a hand off and gained 10-yards. Full back Tony Richardson took one hand off and gained 10-yards, and tight end Kris Wilson caught a six-yard pass and ran it 10-yards and another attempt to hit Wilson fell short.

After practice tight ends Tony Gonzalez and Kris Wilson stayed after practice to work on catching the ball.

Running back Samkon Gado did work before and after practice today. Gado did a lot of running drill today and worked on the JUGS machine. Gado was the last one to leave the field today.

Defense

Linebacker Derrick Johnson made a huge play to end 7-on-7 drills this morning. Johnson scrambled 30 yards downfield covering a wide receiver. This was a very unusual design scheme to have a linebacker covering a fleet wide receiver, so it shows the confidence coaches have in Johnson's speed. Johnson made the interception off of quarterback James Kilian and ran down the field to end those drills. Johnson, after practice, spoke about the play, saying that he was working on dropping into coverage of the wide receivers, and that he had him inside out, and that he ran down the field with him and ended up next to him, and finished up with the ball.

Johnson talked after practice this morning about his role in the defense, and said that he is starting to get the defense behind him. Although he came to camp a little late, he said that he is catching up with everybody. "I think I'm doing pretty good right now. I just came to play. I know what I have to do," Johnson said.

Johnson has also been seen getting yelled at on the field, and said that he is used to getting it, and is using it as positive criticism. He also hopes that he is a starter this season, and can be seen switching in during practice, and mostly running with the ones. "If I can show the coaches what I can do out there, I will be starting," said Johnson.

He is additionally very excited about the preseason game on Friday vs. the Minnesota Vikings. "This is going to be a big game. I have never been to an NFL game, or been in one, so it's going to be a big game for me."

Vermeil is very impressed with his No.1 draft pick Derrick Johnson. "Well, when you can move like he can move there is no limitation to what he can do. You know he can catch up to the football if it travels. I don't know if he can run faster than the football flying, but he can get there and that's why he was the number one pick. He has tremendous athletic talent and skill, and I don't know how long it's going to take him, but he's going to be one of the premium football players in this league. I think he'll be a candidate this year for defensive man of the year as a rookie," says Vermeil .

Commenting on Johnson's interception, Vermeil noted, "It's the kind of throw that made it more spectacular. He had to go after it and it wasn't just side by side with the receiver and the ball came to the receiver. He's a very talented young man," said Vermeil.

In the pre-season game on Friday, Johnson is expected to play about a quarter and a half or so.

When asked about linebacker Coach Fred Pagac after practice, Johnson said that he is a "mini Gun." He described him as a who that is going to get into your face and be hands on. "He does a great job with us." Johnson was also asked what he thought about Coach Vermeil's comments to the press that he believes Johnson will be a starter and a contender for Rookie of the Year. "It's good to have a coach that has those expectations and believes in you. Hopefully, if I'm a player that produces a lot in the first year, that Rookie of the Year can come through."

During the first round of 11-on-11's, things began to get heated between defensive end Eric Hicks and center Casey Wiegmann. At the end of a play, punches were flying between the two, and their helmets came off. Hicks was yelling at Wiegmann that he had stuck his finger in his eye. Veteran linebacker Kendrell Bell began to pull them apart and told them, "We have one play left," encouraging them to get back into the game.

Coach Vermeil discussed the scuffle after practice, saying that "it's great to see them compete against each other as intensely as they did this morning." However, "It will be more fun to see them compete together on game day."

Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham displayed extreme intensity today after a few defensive mistakes. During 11-on-11 drills, the offense and defense competed in mock two minutes drills, which are designed for the defense to not allow the offense to score. However, the defense allowed them to score twice, with wide receivers Chris Horn and Dante Hall both scoring.

During 11-on-11 drills, Jared Allen made two sacks, both on quarterback Todd Collins. Cornerback Eric Warfield batted loose a ball that was in wide receiver Craphonso Thorpe's hands, forcing a fumble. Also, linebacker Gary Stills made a near intercepting catch off a ball thrown by quarterback James Kilian. The ball was intended for tight end Kris Wilson.

Defensive tackles Junior Saivii and John Browning both returned to practice today after missing a few days. Coach Vermeil was pleased with their performance. "They were back today, Browning was moving real good, and Saivii pretty good," said Vermeil .

Asked about his impression of the linebackers, Vermeil noted, "I just know that we've never had three at a time that can move collectively together like they can move. Now we really haven't seen Kendrell Bell, we really haven't. I hope he can move like we thought he could move, but we haven't turned him loose yet. Sooner or later we have to turn him loose to see if he can move like the other guys. We know he used to be able to and he did, We've seen him move without pads on, those kind of things. Keyaron Fox is moving real well, they're all moving real well.

During 7-on-7 drills this morning, defensive line coach Carl Hairston was heard yelling at his unit to pull it together and start paying attention as they continuously got pushed down the field.

Fans

Charles Dixon, River Falls, Wis., has attended almost every afternoon practice so far during this Summer Training Camp. His two favorite Chiefs players are wide receivers Eddie Kennison and Dante Hall. One of Dixon's best memories of the Chiefs was last year at camp when he got picked out of the crowd to catch field goals for the players. Relaxed and confident he took the field and showed off his skills. Also, Dixon has had the opportunity to meet Kennison, Hall and wide receiver John Booth. When asked how he thought the Chiefs were going to do this season, Dixon said, "They will definitely be better than last year, especially with their improved defense." Dixon is 15 and is a member of the River Falls High School football team.

Tyler Bloomer has been attending Summer Training Camp for four year in a row. This year he brought along his girlfriend Amanda Opolka to enjoy the wonderful scenery here at River Falls - the Chiefs . He appreciates the passion and determination of players like running back Priest Holmes and quarterback Trent Green. Bloomer recalls the time last year when he got a picture with Holmes and was impressed by the star's willingness to sign autographs for everyone who was there. "This year I believe that the Chiefs have an opportunity to go to the playoffs if they take care of business," Bloomer foresees. Bloomer is from Davenport, Iowa, and would like to give a shout-out to his parents, Jay and Katie back at home.

Sue Kurtz , a River Falls townie, is a local Chiefs fanatic. She attends almost every practice at Summer Training Camp and is consistently decked out in her Chiefs attire. Chiefs camp evokes many wonderful memories of coming to practice with her late father. The pre-eminent football memory involves the renowned Derrick Thomas. "One day I was standing in the front of the crowd and some feisty lady knocked me down on the street. Derrick Thomas got off of the fire truck and came to help to me up. " Though her ankle was injured, her experience meeting the legendary linebacker was unforgettable. She admits that she is a Packers fan at heart, but the Chiefs are her favorite AFC team.
Extra, Extra…Read All About It!

"Excellent energy in our practice today, really excellent energy," said Coach Vermeil while he greeted the media for this morning's press conference.

Tight ends Tony Gonzalez and Kris Wilson spent some time with coach Jason Verduzco working on short cuts off of both feet both during and after practice.

Wide receivers Nathaniel Curry, John Booth, Jeris McIntyre, and Samie Parker spent time taking reps off the JUGS machine after practice this morning.

Linebacker Boomer Grisgby spent some time after practice working on blocking. Defensive coach Gunther Cunningham had not been pleased with Grigsby during 7-on-7 drills this morning. At one point, Cunningham pulled him aside and yelled, "Boomer, you take over. You take command."

The Chiefs offensive line signed autographs for fans following practice today. Guard Will Shields was not present.

----------------------------------

Derrick Johnson is the greatest shutdown cornerback in the history of the NFL.

I wonder what DV is talking about with not having turned Bell loose yet. I saw a survey of NFL players and coaches from a year or so ago where he was voted the fourth hardest hitter in the league. I hope he still has that.

I think Gonzo is fine, now. He's just milking it for all it's worth, he hates training camp. I don't care what he does, he's an all-pro.

I think he means they haven't really let him loose, like blitzing him, etc. I think. I don't think it's bad, it's just DV pumping him up a little.

I really don't understand these negative comments about Hicks.

Marty liked him.
Gunther liked him the first time around.
Vermiel likes him.
Robinson liked him.
And, Gunther likes him this second time around.

Can all these coaches be so retarded that they'd play someone that's not capable of playing? Or, that they'd sacrifice a chance to go to a superbowl because they have a favorite player?

I just don't understand comments like this ??????????

"I really don't understand these negative comments about Hicks."

I don't understand why he's still on the team when he hasn't done anything since 2000. Must be a character over performance clause in his contract.
