Worse? I don't know.

As overwhelmed? Absolutely.

This isn't a Democrat versus Republican issue, IMO. I know that folks enjoy (with some justification) calling Bush an idiot, chimp, et al. But, I'm of the opinion that Katrina didn't give a sh*t about who was in office.

A major US city was hit by a Category 4 hurricane (not to mention MS and AL). That city has been almost totally evacuated. Local and state government (i.e., the first responders) were not prepared. The federal government was not prepared.

And how many of them were apparently tasked with being primarily responsible for the evacuation/defense/restoration of a major US city?

It woulda killed Bubba.

When he heard Katrina was blowin' on shore, he would have been standing in the French Quarter with his underoos around his ankles!

I can't help but say how refreshing it was to see Clinton responding to questions in a way that actually exhibited a comprehension of the issue.

After yesterday I'd be surprised if we see very much more of the Bush/Clinton tour. I'm sure the White House doesn't appreciate the fact that James Lee Witt is in New Orleans doing Brown's job. In the same vein, I doubt they are thrilled that Clinton makes Bush look like a first-rate amateur.

Fair enough.

I just find it amusing to a certain extent how politicized this has become. The federal government is the federal government, regardless of whom is POTUS. Anyone expecting or demanding that it respond quickly and efficiently to a crisis is, quite simply, unfamiliar with it.

But, it's easier to blame Bush. He's admittedly an easy target right now. But, anyone that is familiar with the governments of the state of Louisiana and the city of New Orleans will tell you that there should be no surprise that they failed their people.

I'm still waiting for Bush to get the Carter treatment which he wholeheartedly deserves.

Let's see now...........high gas prices and a foreign policy blunder.

Carter was an oil industry outsider and at the mercy of OPEC. Bush is an oil insider who has presided over increasing annual gas prices and increasing annual record profits posted by the oil companies. No contradiction there, huh?

Hmmmm........Carter bad. Bush good.

Carter had to play the cards that were dealt him in the Iranian hostage crisis. Little did he know that the Reaganites were undermining his efforts to negotiate a release of the hostages by negotiating a deal themselves which insured that Iran kept them longer in order to secure Carter's demise. Bush manipulated intel as well as the American public in order to attack another country, ultimately costing us untold numbers of lives, billions upon billions of dollars, a loss of America's integrity, and most likely a weakened nation whose future prosperity and security are at serious risk.

Hmmmmm........Carter bad. Bush good.

Donger, you can at least admit that the comment Bush made about Trent Lott's house was uncalled for and poorly timed. If a leader can be that unaware and thoughtless it scares me.

Absolutely. It was an idiotic thing to say.

Bush has a history of trying to use humor to lift spirits. This was, at the minimum, very bad timing.

Then again, I think that most people would acknowledge that if every public word was recorded and dessimated, we'd all have a few "WTF was I thinking?" moments.
