Late-blooming Trent Green has made a big impact in K.C. — and in D.C.

It was the dinner that almost changed Washington Redskins history.

The 1998 season had just ended. The Greens and the Turners were dining at a Northern Virginia restaurant.

Trent Green had just passed what amounted to a 14-game audition for coach Norv Turner , completing 278 of 509 passes for 3,441 yards, 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Between the appetizer and the entrée, the talk turned to 1999. Green told Turner that although he was a free agent, he loved Washington, loved Turner’s offense and wanted to remain with the Redskins.

There was just one problem. Jack Kent Cooke had died in April 1997, and the team’s new ownership had yet to be determined. Green told Turner that as much as he wanted to stay, he had no idea if the Redskins would come after him, and he couldn’t afford not to listen to other offers . Turner didn’t disagree.

It wasn’t until July 1999 that Daniel Snyder officially gained ownership of the team, five months after Green signed a four-year deal with the St. Louis Rams.

“I think about it all the time,” said Green, who will face the Redskins for the first time Sunday as quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. “I’ve talked to Norv about what would have happened had the Cooke family kept the team. ... It would have been interesting.

“They did make me an offer on the eve of free agency, but it was not enough. There were better deals. By the same token, had they made me that same offer late in the season, I might have taken it. I was a guy used to making minimum wage. It would have looked good.”

Since Green’s departure, the Redskins have gone through quarterbacks and draft picks the way desert travelers go through water.

Brad Johnson cost a No.1 and 3 pick in a 1999 trade with Minnesota. Three years later, they used a No. 1 pick on Patrick Ramsey. In 2004, Joe Gibbs sent a third-round choice to Jacksonville for Mark Brunell. Last spring, they used another first-rounder on Auburn’s Jason Campbell.

“They’ve gone through quite a transformation,” Green said, in classic understatement.

So has Green. It took the better part of two years to come back from a knee injury suffered in St. Louis, by which time Kurt Warner had taken over the job and coach Dick Vermeil had bolted for Kansas City.

Green joined him in 2001 and has led the Chiefs to 36 victories, second-highest total in team history behind Len Dawson. He has passed for 22,000 yards, 136 touchdowns and just 85 interceptions.

Green’s 87.9 career passer rating is the sixth-highest in league history, behind Steve Young, Warner, Daunte Culpepper, Peyton Manning and Joe Montana. Two are already in the Hall of Fame, and there’s a chance the rest will join them.

“He’s extremely accurate and totally aware of what’s going on out on the field,” Vermeil said.

“He takes such good care of himself. He’s the Jerry Rice of NFL quarterbacks. Is he a flamboyant guy? No. But he’s a guy coaches love.”

Green, 35, established 15 Chiefs records in his first four seasons , which is the epitome of making up for lost time.

An eighth-round pick by San Diego in 1993 out of Indiana University, Green was released a year later and migrated to Canada. He lasted less than a month with British Columbia.

One year later, he signed with the Redskins, where he was stuck behind Heath Shuler and Gus Frerotte. In 1997, he thought he had a shot at the backup spot behind Frerotte, only to see the Redskins bring in Jeff Hostetler.

“I knew then they weren’t bringing in that guy so I could compete with him,” Green said.

Sure enough, Hostetler threw 144 passes that season. Green threw none.

“For street free agents, the opportunities just don’t come,” Green said. “It’s been a long, strange trip. When I talk to people who don’t realize the whole journey, they don’t believe me.

“I would have liked to play sooner, but because of it I was more prepared to play when I got the chance. It helped me build character.”

Washington coach Joe Gibbs said Snyder told him on the flight back from Denver on Sunday that not being able to sign Green was “something he looked back on and regretted. He wished he’d have had the chance to keep him.”

How might it have changed Redskins’ history? No one will ever know.

I'm shocked that Daniel Snyder actually admits to making a mistake. I hope Green goes off in this game and passes for 500 yards.

I guess accuracy in the media is still a thing of the past. Not like this is hard to find out.....

It wasn't Snyder's mistake. It was Charlie Casserly. Casserly traded a 1st and a 3rd round pick to the Vikings for Brad Johnson before Snyder bought the team and Green signed with the Rams right afterwards. Snyder has gone on record saying that he wanted to keep Green.

Snyder has made his share of mistakes but this wasn't one of them.

Irregardless it still makes me warm inside to see that little weasel experience misfortune.
