The Big Play Conundrum

So we've played another game where the Chiefs have done a good job on defense only to give up a big momentum-shifting play. Statistically, the Chiefs are doing great against the run 99% of the time (if you take away the 65-yard run last night we'd have the #3 rush defense), but it got me thinking about what the cause of these long runs/pass plays actually is. Is it an overly aggressive scheme? Recurring brainfarts by players (ahem, Greg Wesley) who get out of position? And do you think we're closer on defense to the team that played in the first half against the Dolphins or the second half?

If memory serves me well, I remember that our Gunther coached D's back in the mid ninties used to give up big plays as well. I specifically remember we used get burned by the screen passes all the time. Terrell Davis busted off a few long runs against us as well. I think its the nature of Gun's D. Hes a go for broke, all or nothing kind of guy.

Ick. Don't remind me of that 5-yard Ed McCaffrey crossing pattern that turned into a 50-yard run and a go-ahead score in that 97 playoff game.

i think its because the players quit before the whistle. at least that was the reason on the ronnie brown run, they thought he was tackled and stopped. weak tackles don't help either.
being relaxed with game in hand seems to be a reason as well. they get comfortable being ahead. same as the philly game. is that because they're spoiled from having a great offense in the past?
