Merrill - Chiefs get boost for San Diego matchup

CHIEFS GET BOOST FOR SAN DIEGO MATCHUP

Vermeil sees win-win from rushed Miami trip

By ELIZABETH MERRILL

The Kansas City Star

Around the same time the Chiefs were supposed to be playing Sunday, Dick Vermeil sat in his office with two TVs going.

The Chargers-Eagles game was on with the sound turned down. A Kansas City-San Diego game from 2004 was on the other tube.

“Today is a preparation day,” Vermeil said as his coaches huddled in the staff room. “Nothing has changed for the coaches.”

What seemed like a huge inconvenience for the Chiefs late last week may turn into an advantage Sunday when Kansas City plays at San Diego. Less than 48 hours after going to Miami in a hurricane-hurried game, Vermeil’s staff was busy at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, breaking down film of the Chargers, who lost 20-17 on Sunday in Philadelphia.

“There’s no advantage now,” Vermeil said, “but there should be a little advantage by the end of the week.”

The coaches had Saturday night off; the players aren’t due back until Tuesday. Vermeil said they’ll need that much time to recover after playing two games in six days and outmuscling the Dolphins 30-20 on a muggy night in South Florida.

Vermeil said his team landed about 2 a.m. Saturday “exhausted” after 81 offensive snaps and roughly 17 hours of traveling, preparing and playing.

There were cramps and muscle strains from the humidity, but the Chiefs still managed their best offensive night of the season, rolling up 462 yards of offense. After watching tape, Vermeil said he was also impressed with the defense, which held the Dolphins to 212 yards until the final series, when backup Sage Rosenfels hit Chris Chambers for a 77-yard touchdown pass.

“I’m very pleased with the progress we’ve made,” Vermeil said. “A game like that can many times help you psychologically as well as in the win-loss record. We’re going on the road to play a great football team next week, but it certainly helped us.

“I think it helped us believe in ourselves. It’s a vivid example of what you can do when you play hard and play smart.”

If Vermeil was giddy after Friday night’s win, by Sunday, he was over it. The Chiefs went 0-2 against San Diego last year, and Vermeil said the season-ending 24-17 loss was the worst game of the year.

The Chargers deactivated their best players — running back LaDainian Tomlinson, quarterback Drew Brees, tight end Antonio Gates, nose tackle Jamal Williams — in that game to rest them for the playoffs. Their B team still hammered the Chiefs for 54 minutes before Larry Johnson scored two late touchdowns.

On Sunday in San Diego, the Chiefs may play without starting receiver Samie Parker. Vermeil said Parker was doubtful and will have a second opinion on his knee today. Parker was injured in the Washington game Oct. 16.

He isn’t expected to be out long-term, and Vermeil said the Chiefs aren’t planning on picking up another receiver. Marc Boerigter and Chris Horn both suited up in Miami, and both came up with big plays. Boerigter caught two passes for 34 yards, including a key 29-yard completion on third and 1 in the first half.

Horn caught a 50-yarder on the Chiefs’ first touchdown drive of the game.

Within a nine-day span, Kansas City’s outlook has dramatically changed. The Chiefs have won two straight, and on a quiet Sunday in his office, Vermeil seemed ready to take his team back on the road — this time with some advance notice.

“I just think the whole organization was very proud of their football team Friday night,” Vermeil said. “I expected them to do that. Like I said all along, they couldn’t have assigned a better group to go to Miami and play. They handled it well.

“You’re not going to be a playoff-caliber team if you can’t win on the road. Remember this — Super Bowls are played on the road.”

I still can't get through one of Merrill's columns without thinking of some frazzed woman furiously typing late at night thinking to herself, "No good woman reporters in sports, eh? I'll show them! I'LL SHOW THEM ALL!"

I know Dante had a spectacular play as a WR on Friday, but I'd like to see him play very little WR.

Wasn't spectacular but he made a nice juke move after a 2 yard pass on a 3rd down play and turned it into a 12 yard play and a first down.

Dante does contribute some as a WR. In the few snaps he does get, he plays pretty well as the 3rd or 4th WR. And for those that think Boe is better than Parker, keep in mind that he had some drops on Friday night, too. I like them both, but I'll go with the coaches on this one. Sammie Parker earned that starting spot. Sure, he had the dropsies for a couple games that cost the Chiefs. But he was playing a decent game against the Skins until he got hurt. I'm still not ready to give up on him.

All I think of when I get upset and frustrated with Parker is how we all (except Bob Dole) about Dante a few years ago. I just keep praying that this is another case of Vermiel seeing something the rest of us are missing.

Bo dropped three straight passes the other night before pulling one in...is that because he's rusty or just dropsy-ridden?

his last full(healthy) season he led the team in drops IIRC

i think the order was:

1. Boerigter - 8
2. Kennison - 7
3. Gonzo/Morton - 5

Yup, he has had a bad case of the dropsies since his first year. Heck, at least two of his, very catchable, drops on Fri ended drives.

Its sad that we can't find a WR who can catch the ball more the 50% of the time it is thrown to them.
