On the game: “It’s never over when you compete against those guys, but this is a big win for us, a big win, a significant win. We have a real struggle on our hands with the remaining schedule and, like I said a couple of weeks ago, they gave that kind of tough schedule to the right kind of kids. I firmly believe that. I’m not going to say we’re going to go beat everybody but they’re going to play.

“Larry Johnson got tough yards and he’s a tough guy. Our third down efficiency was very good through the ballgame and we ended up being able to do some things and control the clock just a little bit. They’re so explosive and their scheme is so complicated in what they do in terms of going one way and then the quarterback coming the other way. They got 131 yards running and that’s the most anyone’s gotten on us for a while.”

On the fourth down reversal in the 4th quarter: “What do you have to lose? It didn’t look like he made it from where we were standing. Mike White just automatically put the flag out. What do you have to lose? It really wasn’t close in our eyes. It’s a real advantage when it’s a big game because you have so many more cameras and a great director in the booth and a producer and every shot that can show where that ball is can be utilized. It’s to the referee’s credit. You know, a lot of guys may not have reversed that. That’s a gutsy call on the official’s part. Sometimes they make a mistake and don’t go along with me. All we had to lose was a timeout and we had a strong feeling that he didn’t make it. Mike White was standing right on the line and he threw the flag before I yelled at him. I was talking to the press box asking, ‘does it look like they made it? Does it look like they made it?’ Bang, Mike had the flag out there.”

On the difference in his team during the second half: “If you take their best shots, where do they go from there? How many more great shots do they have? It’s a well- conceived offense and they always have tremendous game plans. They always do a very good job in the first quarter and they come out and have scored on five opening drives of the third quarter. We felt at halftime that it was critical that we don’t give them a score in that first drive. We got ‘em off the field right away. Sometimes you run out of those plays. We ran out. You use them and use them and some work and some don’t. Then all of a sudden, all those plays that are chunks maybe down field, are no longer there. So, you’re repeating. I think that’s part of it.”

On Larry Johnson in the fourth quarter: “A big strong guy. The other thing is the offensive line. Our offensive line is healthy right now. They bitch and moan on the sideline all the time. They’re always mad you’re throwing the ball. They want you to run right up behind them. I always hear some grumbles. Casey Wiegmann will come over and give us a growl. You know something. . . .more often than not they’re right. They wanted to go at them more and we went after them after we got our perimeter running going. Notice that Larry ran better on the outside perimeter tonight. He’s learned how to run out there and be patient and he read those blocks. He stretched the big 30-some yarder to the left. He stretched it and then cut it back, rather than cutting it back too soon. It’s all part of maturing. He’s a big horse.”

When they scored that first touchdown did you sense “here we go again”? “We made a mistake. The defensive line went in the wrong direction. They would have been standing right in the guy’s crotch if they had gone in the right direction. If you didn’t see Gunther you could have heard him.”

On the game: “We kept in it with the run. We were getting shut down at times, but those guys on the offensive line are so fired up, Brian Waters and Casey Wiegmann, about getting the ball up the field and we started pounding them more and more. The more we got excited [the more] the defense got pumped up and we started making big runs.

“It was a special game for me, especially against this type of defense. Everybody including the media expects me to fold and think that their linebacking crew was going to shut us down. Our offensive line did a great job of getting in a rhythm and getting us going.

On wearing gloves today when earlier saying he was not going to: “I was really contemplating it. The ball wasn’t so hard. As the wind went on and the sun was going to go down, that ball was going to be as hard as a rock. I wanted to make sure that I kept it secure and make sure when it came down to a game like this that I didn’t fumble.”

On whether or not this team is gelling: “I think so. Everybody’s coming together. We’re all rooting for each other, no one is getting down and blaming and pointing fingers. I’m just so proud of Gunther Cunningham because he and I have talked years on top of years getting our final respect and due. I’m just proud of the defense. I’m more proud of the defense than I am of the offense. The defense played with a lot of heart. They have been taking a lot of shots all season and the last couple years that I’ve been here. Those guys really stepped up and answered the call.”

On Denver’s fourth down run, did you think he was short? “I had doubts. When you go up in there, even for a running back, you don’t get turned sideways. It’s hard to give you first down when you get turned sideways. He [Denver RB Mike Anderson] really didn’t keep his feet or get any forward leaning. I was happy that he got stopped.”

On today’s victory: “Eddie Kennison and Samie Parker blocked their butts off. The offensive line, those guys love to block and run block. Tony Richardson has done such an awesome job of lead blocking for me. Everybody has an effort in the run, knowing that they were the best run defense in the league. To come out and show that type of effort, I’m proud of them.”

On him showing patience on some of his runs today: “That kind of shocked me, because that’s not really my thing, or my character. I felt I was out of character bouncing out, and after awhile I got comfortable with it. Of course, on that last touchdown, I had it, was being patient and keeping with it, really frightening myself. I was saying ‘Stay out there, stay out there and don’t turn it back in there.’ There was a time I would have turned inside and gotten tackled. But I had patience and came out there with the rest of the boys.”

On the game: “I take my hat off to Kansas City. They found a way to win the football game and that is the bottom line. We had some opportunities there in the first half offensively and could not get any points in the end zone. You do that on the road, usually good things do not happen. But a credit to them, they moved the ball very good against our defense. They established the run and controlled the tempo of the game. I thought offensively we moved the ball quite well but couldn’t get as many points as we would like. Anytime you are 2-4 in the Red Zone on the road usually it’s hard to come away with a win.”

On the possible 52-yard field goal at the end of the first half: “We felt like we had at least 10 to 15 more yards. The wind was blowing quite a bit that is one of the reasons why the ball was being kicked off that way. Obviously, the ball was not going very far but that was strictly based on the wind.”

On the Chiefs run defense and trying to contain RB Larry Johnson: “They did a good job. I am not sure what the average per rushing attempt was but it had to be in the four to five area and that is very good against our defense. They were very consistent. They did a good job in the passing game and the running game. We had some turnovers, but like I said we were still 2-4 in the Red Zone. If you can go 4-4 or at least 3-4 you have a chance to win those games.”
