NY Newsday: Chiefs & Jets discussing deal for Herm, despite denials

Will Edwards jet?
Chiefs reportedly discussing deal for coach, but Bradway says no team has reached out

BY KEN BERGER
STAFF WRITER

January 4, 2006

The Jets and Chiefs were said to be discussing a deal last night that would allow coach Herman Edwards to walk away from the last two years of his contract and replace Dick Vermeil in Kansas City.

The NFL Network first reported the discussions, which were confirmed by a person with knowledge of them who said, "They're going on, and people in your building know that they're going on ... Right now there is absolutely smoke and fire."

The network reported that the Jets were discussing a compensation package for Edwards that included "middle-round picks." The talks apparently were part of an informal feeling-out process between the teams.

One high-ranking team official described the discussions as "a staging process," but did not have first-hand knowledge of them. Three other high-ranking team officials contacted last night did not have knowledge of the talks, either.

The news came less than two hours after general manager Terry Bradway said on his season-ending radio show at a Long Island hotel that Edwards' situation "hasn't been addressed. Officially, I have not gotten a call from Kansas City and I'm not expecting one as of right now."

When approached after the show, Bradway reiterated that there had been no contact between the teams. He indicated that if a team called about Edwards, he would talk with his coach to gauge his interest in leaving. Asked if he'd consider a compensation package that includes draft picks to let Edwards out of his contract, Bradway said, "I can't answer that. I have nothing to say."

Chiefs president Carl Peterson declined to address the Edwards situation yesterday in a regularly scheduled news conference in Kansas City, saying, "I just would prefer to keep that confidential." But earlier this week, Peterson said he'd like to speak with Edwards if the Jets would allow it. No team can interview a coach under contract without permission.

Edwards, who guided the Jets to the playoffs in three out of five seasons, is believed to want more security because of the extent to which the Jets' roster must be rebuilt after a 4-12 season caused by conspiring forces of age and injuries.

With the Raiders firing Norv Turner yesterday, there are seven NFL head coaching jobs open, with the Lions' decision on Dick Jauron still pending. Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, one of the Chiefs' top candidates, signed a three-year, $8-million extension with the Redskins yesterday and is now making more than Edwards ($2 million per year).

Meanwhile, Jets defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson confirmed that he will interview for the Saints' head coaching job this weekend or next. "I'm honored," said Henderson, who thinks Edwards will stay. "Based on what Herm told me, he's going to be here ... He told us all that he's going to be here. I wouldn't doubt him. He's never told me a lie."

Notes & quotes: P Ben Graham, an exclusive-rights free agent, was signed to an undisclosed contract extension.

"Officially, we haven't received a phone call from Kansas City," Bradway said late yesterday on his radio show. "I really can't comment. Carl (Peterson) will have some options and we'll see what happens."

Bradway chose his words carefully, because he and Chiefs president Peterson, a close friend, did have a brief, "unofficial" conversation in the morning, a person with knowledge of the situation said. They agreed to talk again later in the day. The two teams discussed a package that includes "middle-round draft picks," the network reported.

The compensation issue could be a stumbling block - if it isn't already. The Chiefs are said to be reluctant to part with premium draft choices. Peterson, speaking to reporters in Kansas City, declined to comment when asked specifically about Edwards.

Edwards, who put in a full work day at Weeb Ewbank Hall, maintained that he has no desire to leave. He has two years remaining on his contract. Anticipating a major rebuilding job after a 4-12 season, he's believed to be seeking a two-year extension.

"I'm the Jets coach and that's what I anticipate (for 2006)," he said from his home last night. "I'm not looking at anything."

Meanwhile, the Chiefs continued the search process, lining up interviews with other candidates. They already have interviewed Vermeil's right-hand man, offensive coordinator Al Saunders, who also has drawn interest from the Vikings, Lions and Texans. He's the Chiefs' leading candidate, ESPN reported.

That, of course, could be a smoke screen, a ploy by the Chiefs to make the Jets lower their compensation demands - if, in fact, they're willing to part with Edwards. Bradway has declined comment; he and Edwards are scheduled to hold an end-of-the-season news conference tomorrow.

Edwards' case for a contract extension and/or raise was bolstered yesterday with the news that Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams re-signed for a reported $8 million over three years. As an assistant, he will be earning more than Edwards, who makes about $2 million a year.

Well he was coach of the jets the last 5 years same length of time as DV in the same conference and had to play the Pats twice a year.

Does anyone really think that the Jets have as much talent as the Chiefs? During this time the Chiefs have had much more talent than the Jets but........

The main thing is the main thing. And in bottom lining the main thing Herm did more in NY with less than DV accomplished here in KC.

Chiefs playoff appearances in the last 5 years = 1
Jets playoff apperances in the last 5 years = 3

Chief playoff wins in the last 5 years = 0
Jets playoff wins in the last 5 years = 2

In that pressure cooker of the NY media and with inferior talent he made the playoffs 3 out of the last 5 years. But he did hire Jimmy Raye and Paul Hackett as OC's. But I don't think he's as bad as choice as some make him out to be.

He's still not my choice but I could live with the selection of Herm.

Ditto. WTF has Edwards ever done? His teams have been nothing but underachievers, and his personnel choices haven't panned out.

If CP has some chip on his shoulder that doesn't allow him to give the reigns to Saunders then I wish a pox on him.

I like Edwards...he's a good combo of intensity and dedication to his players...and they respect him a lot back. He'll be a great fit in KC.
Hopefully...he'll bring some of his scouts with him.
