The inertia referred to in the quote is the inertia of the building falling under it's own weight after the structural connections failed due to the fire. It has nothing to do with the inertia of the plane impact. If you cannot understand that a falling building has inertia, you are flatly unqualified to be thinking about this subject.

The right analogy is to take 4 thin candles all the same height and balance a heavy weight on top of them. Not so heavy as to cause the candles to break, but heavy enough that if you increased the weight by a factor of 4 or so, all the candles would fail. Now start heating the candles with a bunch of high intensity blow driers. The heat is not enough to melt the wax, but it wouldn't be surprising if the candles started to bed under the heat of the blow dryers and the relatively heavy load that the was placed on the candles.
