Missouri to investigate handling of Snyder's departure

Missouri to investigate handling of Snyder's departure

By R.B. FALLSTROM, AP Sports Writer
February 14, 2006

AP - Feb 12, 6:10 pm EST

The University of Missouri will investigate the circumstances that led to Quin Snyder's sudden resignation as men's basketball coach last week.

Snyder stepped down Friday, a day after vowing to finish his seventh season with the Tigers. A report in the Kansas City Star said athletic director Mike Alden sent his special assistant, Gary Link, to inform Snyder that he would not be retained.

Link has had no comment about his role in Snyder's resignation. Alden has said he asked Link to "gauge how he's doing," but not to inform Snyder that he was a lame duck. Link (he?) did not return phone calls Tuesday.

University spokesman Joe Moore said Tuesday that Elson Floyd, Missouri systems president, asked Chancellor Brady Deaton to investigate the situation. Chad Moller, the school's sports information director, also confirmed the decision to "take a look at the course of the events."

"Dr. Floyd did ask Chancellor Deaton to look into some questions regarding events surrounding coach Snyder's decision to depart," Moore said.

Missouri won its first game without Snyder on Sunday, ending a six-game losing streak behind interim coach Melvin Watkins. The Tigers are 11-11 overall and 4-7 in the Big 12 with five regular-season games remaining.

Snyder was scheduled to make his first public comments since his departure at a news conference later Tuesday in Columbia, Mo. His lawyer, Wally Bley, said the former coach had been awaiting a signed settlement agreement.

The settlement calls for Snyder to be paid a lump sum of $574,000, according to several reports. He had two years remaining on a contract that paid him $195,000 annually.

"If you were involved in this, wouldn't you want this to be signed, sealed and delivered?" Bley said. "We've got to have the deal done. I've got to see this in writing."

Bley also represented former Missouri point guard Ricky Clemons, whose troubles off the court in part led to Snyder's downfall after leading the school to the NCAA tournament his first four seasons.

Missouri was 42-42 under Snyder over his final three seasons.

Former coach had two years left on contractMissouri offers Snyder $574,000 in settlementBy MIKE DeARMONDThe Kansas City StarThe University of Missouri has offered Quin Snyder $574,000 as a termination settlement in his departure as the school’s head men’s basketball coach.
Wally Bley, a Columbia attorney representing Snyder, confirmed that amount to The Star on Monday afternoon. Bley said the settlement agreement might be signed and sealed as early as today.
On Sunday, after MU officials and the Board of Curators approved the offered settlement, MU athletic director Mike Alden said details of the settlement might not be available for up to a week.
The agreement is being examined by a third party, an attorney with no representative interest to MU or to Snyder.
Snyder’s contract with Missouri — through the spring of 2008 — called for Snyder to have to repay MU his remaining base salary in monthly installments not to exceed a period of more than two years.Considering that Snyder resigned last Friday, with a minimum of seven games remaining beyond those final two years, it could be questioned why MU owed Snyder anything. Bley wouldn’t comment on that.If Missouri were to pay Snyder only the base salary for his contract over the last two years, Snyder would receive only about $380,000. However, beyond the base, Snyder was guaranteed more money for payments made to MU from athletic-apparel manufacturers, broadcast appearances and summer basketball camps.
Chad Moller, sports information director for the MU athletic department, said the school would have no comment on the settlement amount until the agreement had been signed by all parties.

Harpo’s says so long to MU radio showsBy MIKE DeARMONDThe Kansas City StarMissouri’s syndicated sports radio shows “Tiger Talk” and “The Mike Alden Show” are no longer welcome at Harpo’s.
Dennis Harper, owner of the vintage bar and restaurant in downtown Columbia, confirmed to The Star on Monday that he had told MU officials to take their shows elsewhere.
“Yeah, I did,” said Harper, a long-time supporter of MU athletics. “I don’t feel like there’s some honesty going on over there. They threw my friend Gary Link under the bus.”
That reference was the contention, first reported in The Star, that Alden instructed Link to tell now former head men’s basketball coach Quin Snyder that he would be terminated at the end of the season. On Sunday, Alden denied doing that.
But Harper took issue with Alden’s denial, saying that he would not allow MU’s radio show to be broadcast from Harpo’s — neither Monday night nor any time in the future.
“I totally support Missouri’s young athletes, the kids, and (interim) coach (Melvin) Watkins,” Harper said.
“The rest of that athletic department, I don’t approve of how they are running things.”
Alden left for California on Monday, where the answering machine at his office said he would be through Wednesday. On his answering machine, Alden’s voice informed callers that he would not be checking messages while he was out of town.
A member of the MU sports information department said that most officials were involved in a meeting on Monday afternoon, so no immediate response to Harper’s action was forthcoming.
However, plans were in place for “Tiger Talk” — with Watkins replacing Snyder — and “The Mike Alden Show.” Chad Moller, MU sports information director, said the radio shows would originate from the Clinton Club at Mizzou Arena instead of Harpo’s.
Both shows are carried in Kansas City, on a delayed basis each Monday evening, by 610 AM (KCSP).

This sounds like much ado about nothing. Quinn was very classy tonight in his press conference. I don't have a problem with how either side handled the situation. The only problem I have is with the sports media who tried to make a big deal out of a firing/resignation that everyone but Ariel Sharon knew was about to happen.

I would agree with the people who want Alden fired except I'm afraid that Floyd would be instrumental in finding a replacement.

Floyd is what's wrong with this program. It wasn't Snyder. It's not Alden. There's a bigger picture here.
