Ko Simpson, FS South Carolina

*Sounds like an intriguing prospect? He could possibly be available when we pick in the 2nd round. He may be a good candidate to replace Greg Wesley?

Ko Simpson jumped onto the scene as a freshman, showcasing a special talent for the safety position. Not only was he credited with 61 tackles, but he intercepted six passes. He was named SEC freshman of the year and was named to everyones freshman All American lists. This season as a sophomore teams knew he was lurking deep, so he made more of an impact getting to the ball carrier. For the season, Simpson had 103 tackles, 2.5 for loss, along with one interception. All American honors came his way after the season.

Simpson is the definition of a ballhawk in the secondary. He just has a nose for the football. He has a great sense of knowing where the action is going to be and gets there quickly. Simpson had seven picks in two seasons from his free safety spot. He is willing to attack the line of scrimmage and help out in run support. He is a very good athlete, with excellent quickness, and the speed to close on plays.

The biggest problem with Simpson is his lack of experience. He only has two years of experience outside of high school football, despite being 23 years old. He is a draft eligible sophomore, but only spent two years in the program. He did not enroll in school until the Spring of 2004, after signing in 2003. He could stand to add a few pounds to help him handle the physical style of play at the next level.

Ko Simpson is a very good safety prospect. He is an all around talent, with a nose for the football. With Jimmy Williams and Michael Huff being corner/safety tweeners, he may be the best true free safety in the draft. His upside may not be quite as high as the typical sophomore because of his age. This is a deep safety class, but he should be taken on Day One, with workouts dictating just how high he goes.

I'm not a big fan of Simpson. I think the NFL safety has to have serious football smarts, and I question how much of that he can really have gained in his limited time with the game.

I would prefer Bing, although I think Bing will go before Simpson.

Bing is a good prospect. He has trouble staying healthy. That may affect his draft status.

I would prefer Bing as well, but Simpson is a good prospect where we pick in the 2nd...

Of course he'll never make it to our 2nd pick seeing as a team that needs a FS really bad in the Cowboys is ahead of us.

I keep seeing the names Michael Huff and Bing, but both of those guys are strong safeties, right? I think we will be looking at FS, before SS.

Ko Simpson is the true "Free Safety" in this draft. A lot of the other guys are tweeners.

Bing is a Cover 2 safety...in a true cover 2, there's not nearly as much difference between SS and FS.

Huff is being touted as a possible CB prospect, despite playing at SS in college. I would think if he could play CB, he could play FS.

We could use a guy like him IF we're gonna play a cover 2. Realistically speaking though, I don't see him falling to us in the mid 2nd. I see him going late 1st to early 2nd. a lot of teams out there need safeties. You can bet he'll be off the charts by the time we pick. However, I have my concerns. Bing is known to be injury prone. This may affect his draft status. So you never know?

The other thing is that I think Herm has a good eye for safeties. I think we may be able to find someone that we haven't even considered.
