DeJesus inks long-term deal

DeJesus inks long-term deal
Contract runs through 2010 with club option for 2011

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Center fielder David DeJesus has agreed to a five-year guaranteed contract for $13.8 million through 2010.
In addition, the club holds an option for 2011 that could raise the total package to about $20 million.

"After the game [on Wednesday], I called my agent just to see what was going on, and they weren't going up any more, so I was like, 'Let's get it done,' " DeJesus said.

He becomes the second youthful regular to sign a long-term deal. Shortstop Angel Berroa, in 2004, signed a four-year contract extension that could be worth $16 million with the exercise of an option for 2009.

The finalization of the deal is pending on the outcome of a physical examination.

General manager Allard Baird will have six players under contract beyond this year -- DeJesus, Berroa, Reggie Sanders, Scott Elarton and Elmer Dessens.

"Allard came up to me in Spring Training and said, 'We want to start working on this,' and threw out some numbers," DeJesus said.

"Through the process of talking to my agent, it finally happened."

DeJesus, who'll be the Royals leadoff batter, last season hit .293. He missed most of the last month with a strained right shoulder. He had just four errors in 306 fielding chances.

"I can't complain. The opportunity to play every day -- you can't ask for more than that," he said.

"The team is going to be getting better and I feel we're going to be all right."

DeJesus was groomed as the replacement for Carlos Beltran who, as expected, was traded in 2004.

"In the beginning it was tough but, as I got more comfortable, I felt like I was doing things to help the team and hopefully we can keep going and have some winning seasons," DeJesus said.

It is estimated that the Royals' payroll will have reached $45 million by Opening Day. Owner David Glass had given Baird the OK to go to $50 million.

With Mark Redman and Zack Greinke out of action, there's the possibility that the Royals could be looking to trade for a pitcher.

The only two players on the 40-man roster unsigned are catcher John Buck and pitcher Ambiorix Burgos. Baird expects to sign them to one-year deals shortly.

But he'll be trying to sign more players to multi-year deals.

"I would hope by the end of the season we'd be able to add some more pitchers and positional players to the mix," he said.
