Afternoon Bullshit Thread: What if the NFL adopted a Lottery system for the Draft?

I'm still pissed about Colts going from Manning to Luck. They fully embraced the suck for luck, and kudos to them for gaming the system, but also, **** them.

The NBA uses the Lottery in their draft to prevent teams from tanking to get top prospects in the draft. I wonder what that would look like for the NFL?

We talked about it at my office over lunch, and a popular idea was a 2-tiered lottery system for the bottom half of the league.

After the season, the bottom 5 teams (32 to 28) are placed into a lottery drawing for their draft spot, 1st overall thru 5th overall:
32: 40% of the lot
31: 30%
30: 15%
29: 10%
28: 5%

The next 5 teams would have the same structure (27-23) for spots 6-10.
27: 40% of the lot
26: 30%
25: 15%
24: 10%
23: 5%

Then for the following rounds, the order would rotate by one spot each round.

It would add a pretty awesome dynamic to the draft, and build even more excitement leading up. It will never happen, but it was fun to discuss.

And the guy with the Palestinian avatar had the most shit-for-brains system I can think of. The idea of a lottery falls in between.

NBA still has teams who purposely tank.

I think your tiered system would actually encourage teams to tank.

The NHL does a lottery too. It seems to work, though sometimes random chance does some weird stuff. One team (the Edmonton Oilers) has ended up with the #1 pick 4 out of the last 6 years. They've been bad, but they only had a 20% chance of getting it as the #30 (worst) team (twice), a 13.5% chance of getting it as the #29 team (once), and a 11.5% chance as the #28 team (once).

teams are already encouraged, but at least there is a chance that they wont get that first pick in the draft. I'm all for it. Yes, you can still suck, but you still might not get that QB you wanted.

Or you just reverse the order for all the teams that don't make the playoffs.

Last team out of the playoffs picks 1st in draft
2nd team out picks 2nd
3rd team out picks 3rd
etc,etc

12 teams that make the playoffs are still at the bottom per norm

rewards teams for playing well and almost making playoffs

It also helps 'almost good' teams take the last step

shitty teams aren't doing much with top picks anyway, it's the same ones over and over again

They'd put all the ping pong balls in the selector and then find out seven years later that that Patriots' ball had less air inside it than the others.

They should, people would tank less. But then you have to hear the ridiculous conspiracy theories. Idiots will be like what the team with only a 22% chance to win the lottery didn't win!!! ****ING RIGGED!!!!

Only if so many teams get the same chance. The tier system still encourages tanking.

Still variable year to year.

You guys are under the assumption that there is an Andrew Luck every year.

That's simply not the case. The Chiefs had the #1 overall in one of the worst draft years of the past 15 years or so.
