So it seems that the Bush administration (mildly) criticized the Chinese record of abuses of human rights (Cultural Revolution, annexation of Tibet, and Tienniman Square for starters).

Along with that, It's also decided to charge the woman who had the nerve to interrupt the slavemaster in chief of the PRC's speech, and charge her with "willfully intimidating, coercing, threatening and harassing a foreign official." Harassing, maybe. The rest of the charges? As the late Colonel Potter would have put it: "Horse-Hockey".

Hell, if they were so concerned about the finer points of diplomacy, they wouldn't have introduced the Chinese anthem during that same ceremony as the anthem of the "Republic of China"..AKA Taiwan.

IMO, the best thing in the world we could do as far as the Chinese are concerned is encourage their rapidly growing entrepreneurial class through third party(possibly covert) transactions while soundly condemming and limiting trade with their government as we did with the USSR during the cold war. It would take a while, but the disaffection would quite likely lead to a replay of Moscow 1991 in Beijing 2011 (give or take a few years). The Chinese have had a taste of capitalism, and seem to like it. It shouldn't take much to get them to throw off the totalitarian octogenarians running the place.

I think the Milton Friedman-esque capitalism --> democracy argument is proving to be a lot weaker than had been originally thought over the years.

The Chinese are greedy little bastards. Sorry I deal with alot of the nouveau riche little bastards over there and they are the biggest complainers and whiners imaginable.
Not sure they are ready to rock the boat. I'd be surprised at this point to see them do anything. Unless we offered them a dollar or something.

Good point. Maybe if we were to try and bribe the Government of China they would stop torturing and killing their own people all of the time. I am sure that we would be able to get their neighbors help foot the bill also.
