Gretz lies while trying to prove Carl's genious...

GRETZ: DRAFT WEEK - The Chiefs & Carl in the 1st Round
Apr 26, 2006, 5:13:18 AM by Bob Gretz

Punching around the sports talk radio world the other day, back-to-back callers made the same point during a discussion about the NFL Draft: the Chiefs are lousy drafters, especially in the first round.

Itís a common refrain, but it lacks legs to stand on. Itís one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding the Carl Peterson Era at Arrowhead Stadium.

When it comes to first round picks, the Chiefs under Peterson have had their stinkers, the biggest being OT Trezelle Jenkins in 1995. He shouldnít have been a first-day choice, let alone a first rounder. LB Percy Snow (1990) and WR Sylvester Morris (1999) didnít leave much of a mark either, but injuries were a big factor in both cases there (Snow with the ankle he broke at training camp in a moped accident and Morris with multiple torn knee ligament.)

But over 17 drafts, Peterson has been right far, far more than heís been wrong when it comes to the first round.

Take a look at the chart below, chronicling the first-round draft choices of all four teams in the AFC West from 1989 through last season. Pause a minute and look at those names and the number of Pro Bowlers that were produced in the first round. Go through the names and rejoin me at the bottom of the chart.

Only Denver has won more games and more division titles in the last 17 years than the Chiefs. They also won two Super Bowls, something the Chiefs have gotten close to only once, in 1993 with an appearance in the AFC Championship Game.

The Chiefs have ended each of the last 17 seasons in disappointment. But it was seldom because of a failure in the first round of the draft. Peterson first round picks have made 22 appearances in the Pro Bowl from five different players, with three on defense and two on offense. Thatís five out of 14 first round picks.

Only Denver comes close to that with 18 Pro Bowls from five different players out of 14 first round picks.

Talk about bad drafting in the first round Ö that would be Oakland and San Diego. The Raiders have had 19 first round picks and produced just eight Pro Bowl appearances from two players. San Diego has had a dozen first round choices and produced 15 Pro Bowlers, but 12 of those came from one man: LB Junior Seau. The others were by RB LaDainian Tomlinson and LB Shawne Merriman.

No Carl Peterson hasnít been perfect in the first round. But overall, heís done a pretty darn good job with his first round selections, and certainly better than anybody else in the division.

Take a look at the names above and answer this question: who would you rather have making your first-round pick in the AFC West?

Click on the link and look at his chart. It says Darrell Russell of Oakland never made the Pro Bowl, when in fact he made two.

Also doesn't mention that although Mobley didn't make the Pro Bowl in '97, he was All-Pro that year.

What a joke.

Spreading his articles post haste around the web to give him free publicity and promote his ideas... If I didn't know better, I would assume that you were Gretz' biggest fan.

What a joke.
The other thing he fails to mention is that the Donkeys and Chargers have both made changes at the top in the time that Peterson has served as the GM in KC.

The only reason that the Raiders haven't is because the owner isn't about to fire himself.

So Carl gets ALL the credit when things go right and doesn't share in any of the blame when things stink? Gretz is full of shit. BTW, how many rounds are there, Gretz?

its the company line- we're only accountable when good things happen & its the others guys fault if things go south.

Exactly.

Why go to KCChiefs.com and read Rufus Dawes or Gretz when you can come here and read their mirror image?

What a joke? What lies are you talking about? That he didn't say Russell made two Pro Bowls? I would imagine that this was an error. Regardless, it's hardly a crucial fact.

Look, seriously, there was a big list of statistics compiled. You found two errors, and based on those two errors you declare his point a joke? You have to do better than that.

That said, claiming that Peterson has been right "far, far" more than he's been wrong is silly. The Chiefs are average at drafting. Not great. Not awful. Average.

I'd say that we're not too terribly bad in the first round there are some really great players there.

Chiefs:
Derrick Thomas, Dale Carter, Tony Gonzalez, Larry Johnson...

Raiders:
Chester McGlockton?... Charles Woodson?...
(none of these players are even close to the quality of the Chiefs top 4)

Denver:
Steve Atwater, Trevor Pryce, Al Wilson... (Great top 3)

Chargers:
Junior Seau, Ladianian Tomlinson... (Fantastic Top 2)

Jury is still out on: Ashley Lelie, Derrick Johnson, Eli Manning, Robert Gallery, DJ Williams. Any of these guys could be on this list in a couple years.

Looks like the first round is pretty even, with a slight advantage to the Chiefs... But, I'm sure the second round, we'd get slaughtered...
