History of the AFC Pt. 3: The Final Analysis

These rankings are unbiased and are merely based on findings in the reseach.

BALTIMORE/INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

Ranked 4th in the AFL/AFC in the number of wins, but since the days of the merger with the NFL, the Colts have been nothing more than an average team. With a total winning percentage of .501%, they’ve managed to rank 6th in Playoff appearances, but have only won 9 Division Championships, and have only paid 2 visits to the Super Bowl- not very good for a team ranked so high in the number of wins.

BOSTON/NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

They are ranked 8th in total wins and have a below average winning percentage. Not surprisingly, the team didn’t make very many playoff appearances, nor did they win many divisional championships, but they have made the most of their post-season play by making 5 Super Bowl appearances- ranking them in a tie for 3rd among all AFL/AFC teams. Excellent production when it counts the most.

BUFFALO BILLS

They are ranked 10th in total number of wins and near the bottom in winning percentage. They are however ranked 4th in the number of Divisional Championships and Super Bowl appearances, and 7th in the number of Playoff appearances. They have yet to win the big one, but have shown remarkable resilience when making the post season. Considering their winning percentage versus their post-season wins- one could say they are a very up and down team.

CINCINNATI BENGALS

They are at the bottom of nearly every category. They could arguably be considered the worst team ever in the history of the AFC/AFL, but they have made one Super Bowl appearance over the Jets, and have won one Divisional Championship more than the Jets.

CLEVELAND BROWNS

1ST in the number of Playoff appearances, 2nd in the number of wins, and 3rd in total winning percentage! Wow! You would think a team with such outstanding numbers would be in the Super Bowl more often, but sadly enough- they have yet to make it to the Super Bowl- their best chance was fumbled at the goal-line versus Denver in a historic game. Before the merger of the NFL, they were the Packers of the AFL. But, the merger has been a curse on this team and even in modern times- they still don’t have a shot at the Super Bowl any time soon.

DENVER BRONCOS

5TH in winning percentage and 7th in total wins sounds like a team that is just better than average- even their Divisional wins and number of playoff wins are just average at best. But, where the Broncos truly shine is getting to the Super Bowl. They’ve done it 6 times- a remarkable success rate which ties them with Pittsburgh with the number of Super Bowl appearances.

HOUSTON OILERS/TENNESSEE TITANS

They are 5th in the number of Playoff appearances, yet they are below average in every other category. They are tied for 6th in the number of Divisional Championships, but the worst stat of all- they’ve only made 1 Super Bowl appearance. The Oilers/Titans obviously have only been nothing more than a wild-card team with the number of Playoffs they’ve appeared in- just good enough to get in, but nothing more.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

4th in winning percentage and 5th in the total number of wins should be the mark of an outstanding team, but although KC does very well in the regular season, it’s never enough to get them to the post-seasons where they rank 9th in Playoff appearances and near the bottom in Divisional championships and Super Bowl appearances. A lot of good football that fails where it counts the most- in the post-season.

MIAMI DOLPHINS

They rank 1st in total winning percentage and because of this, they are at or near the top in nearly every category making them to be the most consistent team in the entire AFL/AFC.

NEW YORK JETS

Just as the Dolphins are consistently winning, the Jets are consistent losers. Must like the Bengals, they are at or near the bottom of every category, but because Cincy has appeared in more Super Bowls and has won more Division Championships- it’s hard to argue that the Jets are the absolute worst team in the history of the AFL/AFC. Too bad, considering this is a team once led by Joe Namath.

OAKLAND/LOS ANGELES RAIDERS

They are near the top in every single category. Very impressive considering this is a team led by Al Davis who likes to run things his own way. Maybe he really does know what he’s doing. Also consider, this team is in the traditionally rich AFC West competing against teams such as Denver and Kansas City. Which goes to show- when they win- they really know how to win.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS

And speaking of knowing how to win- the Steelers have displayed remarkable success in the post season- winning a resounding 5 of their 6 Super Bowl appearances. They are 1st in wins and Division Championships, but wait! Their total winning percentage is a surprisingly average .502%!!! How can that be? Well, they were a pretty bad team before their Terry Bradshaw, Mean Joe Greene days. Since then, they’ve been very consistent and quite arguably the best team in the history of the AFL/AFC.
Interesting Note: Pittsburgh has the most losses of any team with 480

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS

There is one thing to be said about the Chargers- they are consistently bad. Therefore, it is not surprising to see that they’ve only made one Super Bowl appearance and still managed to lose even that. They have been stuck in a tough division with Oakland, Denver, and Kansas City all having better than average records, but San Diego seemingly could do nothing more than play average football for the most part. However, they’ve managed to win more Division titles than Denver and Kansas City.

Great work but you need to rework the Steelers, Colts and Browns. YOur numbers are wrong.

Why is this interesting? I bet you that if all the other teams started at the same time as the Steelers it would be the same if not higher.

They started in 1933

Also where are you getting your stats from?

This is really nice work.

However, you need to really fix this.

The Browns were one of the All American Football Conference teams until the AAFC discontinued operations (in the late forties, maybe early fifties).

The Browns, along with another team or two, were absorbed into the NFL.

Browns were never an AFL team.
