Niners reeling backward after shutout loss

Niners reeling backward after shutout loss

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) The San Francisco 49ers are back to normal, and that's no good.

Their encouraging start to coach Mike Nolan's second season came to a crashing halt in a 41-0 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, just the once-powerful franchise's second shutout loss in 454 games since 1977.

A team that made incremental progress to the edge of respectability since last season's 4-12 campaign failed at nearly everything it tried at Arrowhead Stadium. The stunned, staggered looks that the 49ers have worn during three straight losing seasons were back on their faces Monday.

The 49ers (1-3) should be on an emotional high as they get ready to face the Oakland Raiders (0-3) in the quadrennial Battle of the Bay. Instead, they're fighting through an emotional haze wondering whether their steady improvement was a mirage.

"You can tell a lot of guys have got a lot of things on their mind, and that's good," receiver Antonio Bryant said after team meetings. "Because if they didn't have anything on their mind, I would wonder. It matters, and that's a good thing. ... I'm definitely looking for us to do the turnaround thing."

San Francisco is 1-3 for the second straight season, though this campaign was much more promising than Nolan's debut until Sunday, when the 49ers regressed. The loss featured their largest margin of defeat since the 1986 NFC championship game and the biggest shutout loss in franchise history.

The 49ers managed just 165 total yards and never got inside the Kansas City 20. They crossed midfield for exactly one play in the second half, even after the Chiefs were irretrievably ahead.

Alex Smith also suffered a setback in his progress into a dependable starter in his second year. He went 13-of-25 with his first two interceptions and season-lows of 92 yards and a 27.4 passer rating, though he spent most of the day on the run from Tamba Hali and the Kansas City pass rush.

"During the season, we had shown a lot of strides up to this point," said Smith, who was sacked five times after going down just four times in the first three games. "Not to overreact (to the loss) is important, but obviously you don't want to under-react. It's not something we want to overreact to and create mass changes or something."

But some change must be necessary after the offense floundered, the defense got shredded and the special-teams units made big mistakes. Nolan hopes an intense week of practice including the unusual step of putting his players in pads on Wednesday and Thursday will get the 49ers back on track.

"You hit plateaus, you hit a valley, and then you like to climb again," said Nolan, who's 1-9 on the road in his brief head coaching career. "You do expect (setbacks) from a young team that's maturing and growing together. But you need more consistency right now than what we've got in the last two weeks. There hasn't been enough."

One thing has been consistent: Frank Gore, the 49ers' otherwise stellar running back, has fumbled in each of the first four games. Nolan knows Gore, who had the ball knocked from his hands by a Kansas City helmet on the 49ers' opening drive, will be a target of opposing defenses for the rest of the season.

Nolan wasn't ready to make any personnel changes on his offensive line after right tackle Kwame Harris failed to slow down Hali. Guard Larry Allen, the 49ers' big offseason free-agent signing, will be listed as doubtful when he returns to practice Wednesday after missing most of the season with a sprained knee ligament.

But while the 49ers' coaching staff struggles for answers, Bryant believes something positive could emerge from these disappointments. He should know about recovering from losses: The receiver has played for six head coaches on three teams in his five NFL seasons, racking up a combined record of 25-43. The 49ers are 25-45 over that same span.

"When something like this happens, it's kind of like a detox," Bryant said. "It forces out all the impurities. ... Guys are going to be in pads Wednesday and Thursday. Guys are going to be upset about it. I take it as a message. You've got to make some type of changes."

Funny highlight reel of the game made by a 49ers fan. Poor 49ers...
Hopefully they make the Raiders pay next week.

Its going to be hard for them to trust Frank Gore as a full time RB even though he's been putting together some nice stats.
