I just won a National Leadership Award from the Republicans!

But they don't know who I am, and I have to give them a contribution to get it!

That is the tackiest fundraising strategy imaginable. I used to get those calls from that DeLay guy's office, and now I'm getting them from Tom Reynolds' office, whoever Tom Reynolds is.

I'm not even a Republican.

Welcome to the world of Fundraising.

I think giving an award is stupid, I stick to petitions, and surveys.

Congratulations. You should have invented the internet - then the award is a Vice Presidency.

Agreed. I'd respect them more if they would just call and say, "Would you be interested in contributing?" or do a petition or something. The award thing is just insulting.

The funny thing is that we had a deadbeat sublessor in our office for a few months about a year ago. We had expanded and had a bunch of extra space at the time. The guy was a joke; didn't pay his rent, totally disorganized, and flat-out incompetent. However, he's good at one thing: issuing press releases and getting his name in the paper. The local business paper just had a big picture of him and said that he had been recognized as a "Republican Leader of the Year" or something. It made me bust out laughing.

Y'know, that may explain why the person asked me to take off my pants at the end of the call.
