Good or Great?

I'm positive that this question has been posed before, courtesy of Rainman, or Mr. FAX, but I either wasn't around, or wasn't awake. So here goes.

Would you rather be good at alot of things, or GREAT at one thing?

Great at one thing.

And good at everything else, of course. There was no stipulation against that.

I'd take great at one thing, if it meant being world class. If great means 1-in-10,000 type talent, then I'd rather be good at lots of things.

Yeah, the circumstances change everything. It also depends on WHAT you would be great at. For example, I might choose "great" if that meant being an NFL-caliber quarterback. If "great" means that I will be the best underwater basket weaver around, however, I think I'll pick "good."

I think that if you are good at many things you can become great at any of them through hard work.

Nature vs. Nurture is the great eternal debate. I'm pretty sure you that you have to have both: the talent to be very close to the top and the desire to push yourself to be the very best. But I don't think you can be good at something (say top 1% talent) and will that into greatness.

If I could be great, I'd be happy with a pretty wide range of talents:

Sports: anything, well maybe not baseball.
Scientist
Novelist
Muscician (classical, jazz, blues, or rock)
Engineer
Politician
Cabinet maker
Machinist
Architect
Artist
Chef
Salesman
Journalist
Anything related to film making (Special effects, Acting, directing etc)
Entrepenuer
Financial Analyst

I guess being the world's greatest ditch digger wouldn't be much better than being an average ditch digger. But my list would be pretty diverse.

I'll take greatness over being just "good" any day. Greatness is what separates Bill Gates from those that work for him and Walter Payton from guys that could play at the college level, but you never heard of after that.

People that are "good" at things are a dime a dozen. Greatness is a rare commodity.
