Worked on Habitat House

So I have no idea how to do a lot of fix-it type things. It's just not something my dad ever taught me (that and fixing cars). I really wish I knew, but I look at a stack of wood, and I can imagine 100 things I'd like to make out of it... but have no idea how to get from that point to the finished product.
With that said, I signed up to work on a Habitat for Humanity house today completely frightened about my lack of knowledge. I was apologising walking through the door for what I was sure would be the extra work I was adding to the real carpenters, etc, there.
The guy they had running things, though, was the most patient, understanding guy. He handed out jobs, and made sure not to talk down to us as he walked us through what needed to be doen. He didn't allow the apologies. And with all that he helped add to one of the more fulfilling days I've had in my life.
It really felt good to put in the work we did (went with my church, by the way) to help another family get a great house. It felt good to be a aprt of something beautiful in a neighborhood that wasn't the most beautiful. And finally... it felt good to not screw everything up. We actually got a ton accomplished, with just a group of 8 today.

Point is, if anyone gets a chance to do this, take the oppportunity. It's a win-win deal, where you feel great, and you help someone else out.

TRhanks for reading...

Very good program. You get a house, but hey, you got to help and then you got to help other people get their dream. I was just the kid that they had painting the basement or something, but that's needed to. Now, I suppose I could help roof, if I did it again.

My church sends a group down to Jaurez, Mexico every year to do a project for Habitat for Humanity. I'd like to go this year if I can. I'm told it can be a life-changing time. That's cool that you did it.

I learned how to build scaffolding my last time at Habitat and it gave me a whole new appreciation for those structures. You have to conquer your fear if you're lifting heavy object on the 3rd story of some shaky scaffolding.

How did you get involved? Have a contact number? This is something that I would enjoy doing.

No offense, but for a college student who wants to be a journalist your grammar is pretty brutal.

My wife and I did this about 5 years ago, and you are correct. It was one of the more rewarding days in my life.

I'd love to take a day off and do what I do every day for fun. Heh.

I'm a civic minded fellow, but I don't see myself doing the Habitat thing anytime soon.

I did it with my church. I'm sure I can find a number for you, but I bet it wouldn't be too hard to look up.

I understand that, for sure.
We had a guy that went with us who is a painter, and we were sure that the last thing he'd want to do on a day off was paint... poor guy ended up painting because he couldn't stand the others not doing it the "right" way. SO I assume anyone who actually does construction would have the same type of stress, and probably clash with the foreman. But like I said, those things were things I simply never learned to do... so learning what I learned, while doing what I was doing, was pretty meaningful to me.

While I understand your reasoning, it doesn't work that way for me. I work all day in Credit/Finance/Accounting, but I occasionally take a day or two a month and teach a class in Fiscal Responsbility to teens/college students. Sometimes in the classes I get everyday people who want a refersher course in how not to bury yourself in a credit pit.

Funny thing....my course is free, not $99.95...not $29.95....not even $9.95....nope you get the same thing from me that someone is making a million off of selling you books or discs to do.

As for Habitat for Humanity....like anyone who has ever done it, you find yourself changed after the experience. It humbled me seeing the person who's house we were building, be thankful for something most of us take for granted....a safe place to live and call their own.

Congrats to you Sully....you may never see the depth of how you have completely changed one persons/families life, but you can feel the satisfaction of a job well done.
