Two weeks from today my fiance will be purchasing her first home (March 30th is the closing date...). ;)

(I'll be there too, of course, but until I'm published I won't be able to be involved with the mortgage part of things, at least "officially". Thought I should clarify that, just for the heck of it. I usually just say "we're" buying a house, but that's not exactly the truth...)

Going to be kind of strange to go from living in someone elses home as renters to having our own house, but we're really excited about it, and will probably start packing like...tomorrow, even though we have a full month-and-a-half to move.

Kind of hard to believe it, and I'll probably get more excited about it as moving time gets closer, but I just thought I'd share the good news with all you folks, and, also, explain my periodic absense for the next few months - have to get my *** in gear writing-wise and I have a lot of packing/cleaning/repairing to do here in the rental house...

Whooo!!!!

Congradulations, I wish I could buy one out here but you can't touch anything for under 500k and I am NOT going to pay that. MAybe the market will soften up a little with the most recent market trend. If I did get a house the first thing I would do is go out and buy a BIG neopolitan matiff.
You have any dogs?

Congrats Keg,
When I bought my house, I would go over almost every day until the closing, just to look at it. My folks thought it was way to huge and expensive for us, but now, we've filled it with kids and junk and it doesn't seem big at all. I have been mortgage free for about a year, and that is nice.
Have fun consecrating the rooms. :)
Congrats again

Yeah, Big Daddy, I know what you're saying. I have a sister in L.A. who's looking into buying a house now as well, and she says that the house we're getting here would cost over 350K out there, probably well over that.

There are perks to living in the midwest... ;)

Moving from my current somewhat rural suburb of Kansas City to a bit more of an urban suburb of Kansas City so I'll still be "keg in kc" for all intents and purposes.

Lucky I guess, that we stumbled on a nice house. Literally the only house out of the dozen or so we walked-through (and probably 50 or 60 more that we looked-at) that we'd even consider buying. There's a bit of a jump in crime rate by average(whee) for the entire county compared to here (rural vs. urban...), but it's a fine house with a nice yard (we have 2 dogs...) in a good-looking neighborhood that is inexpensive enough to make it a no-brainer - even with PMI and taxes mixed-in, our monthly mortgage payments will be less than our current rent.

We're excited and nervous all at the same time...

Follow your own advice and start the packing, cleaning and repairing ASAP. It never looks like as much as it really is. I finished (sort of) a big move almost 2 weeks ago and I'm still worn out. Found some muscles I forgot I had, apparently they'd have preferred to continue living in anonymity.

Sorry, there, Big Daddy, I missed your most important question:

we have 2 dogs. ;)

Tashi, at a little over 2 years, is a 50ish pound black lab/pointer mix. She's solid black except for a white patch on her chest and white on a couple of her paws.

Sheba, the "baby", is a 6 month old pure German Shepherd "puppy", dark brown (almost black) in color. She's about 60 pounds now, and her feet and head still look way, way, way too big for her body.

She's gonna be a big dog, methinks...

Congrats, Kyle. Likewise, the BNC and I are anxiously awaiting the big day. With each passing week our new house gets closer to completion - we now have a roof, windows, doors and bathtubs! The metamorphasis from piles of lumber to an actual house has been amazing. Only another month or so to go until completion, and then closing a couple of weeks after that.

The b!tch of it is that we won't be able to move in until AFTER we get married on June 30 - the BNC's parents (a/k/a the financing committee) have decreed that we cannot occupy the place until we are husband and wife. May and June are going to be hell living in this cramped, ****-sucking apartment when I have the keys to the new place in my hand. But, since her parents are making the downpayment for us, I guess I won't complain too much.

Found out about the satellite dish, too - we can put one up, but it will have to be on a pole and cannot be mounted on the building. That's fine with me - I'll mount the thing on my a$$ if it means I never have miss another Chiefs game.

Anyway, good luck with the new place.

Congrats!!! The Mrs. and I bought a house in October (actually moved in 2 days before Halloween, and then gave out tons of kick-a$$ candy so we would be the "cool" people on the block—no need to get egged and/or tee-peed).

We rented for about two years and love having the place, even though it needs two things: a new roof (but it's small, not leaking right now, so it shouldn't be too expensive) and a new furnace (this one's circa 1976 and 60% efficient).

The great thing is you can crank your stereo and no one cares ... just let the dogs out without you having to worry about getting wet ... park in a garage ... moan and groan when you're—oops, too much sharing. But you get the point! ;)

A few of questions: Where is it (generally)? Who did the inspection (I know a really good guy)? What are you writing (being a writer myself I'm kinda interested)?

Again, CONGRATS!! Being a homeowner is a beautiful thing ... although it will be you're new hobby!

We've actually been renting a (whole) house for two years Mark, so there won't be much difference in that sense, except (notably...) we'll be able to build and destroy things within and around our house!!! Muahahahahaha!!!

Errr, ahem, okay, sorry about that. ;)

I have a program that I've used to design what I want the house/yard (mainly yard, actually) to look like over the next few years. I love to build stuff and do handy-man-ish work, so this is gonna be just awesome for me. So many ideas, just have to make sure we don't do more than we'll be able to legitimately add to the value of the house if/when we sell it in the future...

Not sure how well you know the area, but I'll fill in as much as I can remember. The house itself is in Bannister Heights (We live in the Gladstone/Platte County area now, a bit of a change toward the city, as I said before...). We were a little tentative about the area (I'm a country boy...) until we actually went to the location of the house, and it seems like a generally nice area - nice homes, albeit older ones, with families. Seemed quiet the couple of times we've been there... We're a mile or so away from the mall there, so we're far enough away that it and the interstate traffic isn't a nuisance.

Basically, the house itself was priced so low and in our range that we just couldn't pass it up, pending the inspection, of course, but it didn't appear anything was out of sorts on our walk-throughs. It has 3 bed rooms (the "master bedroom" actually was two bedrooms with the wall removed, so we could put that back and have four BR), 2.5 baths and a partially finished basement. The furnace and A/C unit are both @10 years old and well cared-for. The previous owner installed energy efficient windows as well as vinyl siding on 3 sides of the house (brick on the front), also all well cared-for. 12 years ago, he had a composite roof (30 year, as I recall, but I don't have the paperwork here) put on, so that shouldn't be a problem, either. The termite inspection has been done and is clear. The only question we have at all about the house is his report that there's some slight water in the basement in heavy rain, but in my opinion, it's probably a matter of getting one of the nearby window wells sealed/re-sealed, it doesn't appear to be a problem with the foundation and there's no sign of roof leakage on any walls anywhere in the house. In any event, that's what the inspection is for, to find out any surprises before we make the deal final (we have until tuesday, I believe, to get it insp., haven't done that yet since the contract was only "official" Monday, and we found out yesterday...).

Frazod, glad to hear yours is coming along well, too and glad to hear you'll be getting your Sunday ticket without too much hassle. Not sure if we'll be getting any "help" from either of our families on a down-payment (we're not required to pay one on our loan, but we probably will anyway...) but in any event, we're getting married on October 6th, no matter what parents might think - hell, we've been living together for almost 4 years and engaged for almost three so it's not like there will be much difference after the wedding (knock on wood...). Wish you the best of luck in both the wedding and the new house, in any case. It's a great time, isn't it!

Mark, as for what I'm writing, I'll let you know in a couple of days, because I'm starting my novel over in a few minutes, for all intents and purposes. I've been procrastinating for literally months, but this happening and the looming bills are giving me a sense of urgency I think I needed. My chief interest, in both reading and writing, is science fiction, but there's no guarantee I'll limit myself to writing just that genre, and as a matter of fact, I'd be mightily surprised if I didn't write a variety of things. So, all-in-all, I wouldn't call myself a writer quite yet, because I haven't really written anything noteworthy. I do have a deadline though, financially, so there is pressure to do the writing by August, or give it up and get back into the traditional workplace. I won't fail, though.

No more video games, no more T.V., and much, much less B.B.

Matter of fact, this will probably be my last long-winded post for a long-long time. I can't afford to spend a lot of time and energy on here any more. Play time's over and it's time for Kyle to get his butt moving...

Well, I think that covers just about everything (and then some...). Should answer any question that has arisen or may arise. Thanks everyone for the kind words and support, and I'm gonna get busy now so football season gets here all the sooner... ;)

Heh.

The person I recommend for inspections is Ed Sullivan (I know, funny name), phone # 913-438-7474. The guy does one helluva thorough job. When we decided to get our house, he told us about everything, and nothing new has popped up.

I used to live not too far from Bannister Mall (I worked for 2 years at the Benjamin Hotel, even though it was a Ramada then). The area isn't quite as nice as it used to be, but it's not at all that bad. Failry quiet. And I know the price on the house was right (my wife and I looked in that area, but found one in Eastbumble**** Independence on a HUGE lot ... VERY quiet out there). Have fun with remodeling and landscaping! We'll be starting that this spring.

As far as the book thing goes, I wish you the best of luck! I have several solid and original ideas (mainly in the magical realism genre, like Gabirel Garcia Marquez's (sp?) 100 Years of Solitude and Elizabeth Allende's House of the Spirits) but have never found the time to do them. Unfortunately, I'm not able to take any time off of work to do it. I'm a bit jealous of you as far as that goes! I get my best ideas from 11pm to 4am, which is why I go to bed before 10. If I stay up any later my mind starts racing and I can't get to sleep ... it's almost like a 2nd wind thing.

Again, good luck! And hope to see you pop in on the planet every once in a while!

Kyle,

I bought a "fixer-upper" in october that had taken a severe beating from renters...I'm a bachelor and hit it with "uncaged fury" for about 2 months...worked til' midnight every night after work....ran out of money, supplies and ambition all about the same time...I've redone a bedroom and a half, most of a kitchen(trim and refinish cabinets left), have ALOT left to do....Just remember that EVERY project takes longer and is a little more complicated that you figure it will be....ITs exhausting but rewarding to see a room take shape with your sweat and hands doing the work.....

Some relatives recently moved from that area(Booth Street)...I don't recommend spending much time around Bannister Mall at night....2 family memebers were robbed at gun point there and at the "super walmartghetto" in a 6 month period....there were alot of nice family oriented neighborhoods around there as well...

and its not that far from the stadium...

Yeah, Bannister Mall has gotten a bit scary at night. I remember when it was new and my friends and I would be left up there to "cruise the mall." Got kicked out around 1986 and never been back ... and I still swear it wasn't me who dropped that cup of Sprite on the security guards head. Did I laugh? Hell yes. But did I do it? Show me proof ... ;)

Thanks for the info Mark. ;)

We looked at a few houses here in the northland (housing is booming up here, but everything is ex-pen-sive! and in Independence as well, but they were all in pretty bad shape - because I'm unemployed, I can't be involved in the financial part, so we're limited to how much financing we can get, so the houses we can by are ones that involve a lot of work - as a matter of fact, I think we were getting close to just giving it up.

Then we find this house, which is in basically perfect shape with a decent-sized lot, and is about 10K cheaper than everything else on the market that we were looking at. The chance of it depreciating because the area is already built-up is a risk, but it's by far the best house we can afford, so it's a chance worth taking in both our opinions.

Hence the excitement tempered by a sense of nervousness.

Well, I'd better get to work. Hard to break bad habits...
