Official MLB draft thread

The MLB draft starts at 2 pm ET and will be shown both on ESPN2 (for the first time) and on mlb.com.

I wish, of course, that Tampa Bay would pick someone other than David Price so that the Royals could snag him, but I don't think is likely to happen.

It sounds like the New Jersey high schooler, RHP Rick Porcello, might be asking for too much money, and that Matt Wieters, Georgia Tech's switch hitting catcher is another serious consideration for the Royals with the second pick of the draft.

I can only imagine the howls if we go after another third basemen and end up selecting Josh Vitters.

Ultimately, I think we pull the trigger on the Porcello. Regardless, it'll be years before we know if we made the right choice.

Any other thoughts or predictions?

I have warmed up to the idea of Josh Vitters. He has the athletic ability to play in LF easily in the majors unlike Billy Butler. His bat is way above where most high schoolers are when they are drafted. Outside Weiters who is just asking for an unreal contract he is the best hitter in the draft.

I've also heard they are strongly considering the #2 HS pitcher, Jarrod Parker.

it wouldn't be surprising if we took a 3rd basemen. Gordon is 5 years away from Free agency and it would take about 5 years to get that kid to the bigs.

In baseball there is no reason what so ever to draft by position. With the failure rate, free agency, amount of trades, and position movement you have to go best player available.

Billy Butler was drafted as a 3B out of HS. Can you imagine him still trying to play there? Vitters is expected to play in the OF in the majors.

Yes. Today!

There are a couple of rule changes as well--that theoretically should help teams handle the Borass's of the world.

1--Players must now sign by August 15th--or they have to wait until next year. The poor Diamondbacks just signed their first round pick from last year about a week ago.

2--If a first or second round pick does not sign with his team, then that team essentially gets the same pick again next year. For example, if the Royals drafted Porcello, but couldn't sign him--they would receive pick 2B in the first round of next year's draft (as well as their standard top 5 first round pick).

With that change, I would always take the best player available regardless of signability issues.

I'll take Vitters in the first and Nick Tepesch from Blue Springs High School in the third.

Since Dayton's arrived, it seems his focus has been on building up the pitching staff. While we still have some pitching issues, it's clear that the Royals lack an offensive punch. So I hope we get Vitters but won't be surprised if the pick is spent on yet another pitcher.

I like Price and Weiters. Either would be fine.

Obviously the MLB draft is a big one. But, have any of you guys read anything about any local kids being taken?

I know a Campus graduate, Brandon Johnson from BCCC was selected last year.

Any Shockers supposed to be taken?

Just curious about local kids.
