Romney is such a sleazy bastard.

Well, they all are, but Romney sets me off, kind of like Brownback.

He wins all the internet polls, but we know that doesn't matter. Now he's winning straw polls, same deal?

The fact that Ron Paul supporters are so fanatical throws off anything that isn't a random sampling.

This is for the people who say it's only a matter of time before Ron Paul is forced to concede:

The only thing we can put stock into is that he has some dedicated followers, who are willing to put in a good amount of effort into publicity and getting the votes out. And Paul definitely needs that for the caucuses/primaries.

I'm entertained to see the excitement among the small group here who have just discovered the libertarian message. It's charming. I hope that most of you aren't just into his neo-isolationist message and that you continue to favor the radical small government ideas that the man preaches.

Pat, you have to know by now that I have always been a small government conservative.

Not sure if this is directed at me, but I am actively volunteering for Ron Paul's campaign. I just don't want to measure success in ways that aren't realistic. I will say the good thing about these straw polls is that they demonstrates real grass-roots support, which could lead to a bump in the polls.

All we can do is try.

No, it was just a general comment. Not directed at you.

I'm just saying that it's still quite early in the game. We're still raising funds and getting the message out. There's time to do all that, and these straw polls can help out a lot. John Kerry wasn't even at this level yet in 2003. 75% of the American people can't possibly tell me that before he ran for president, they knew who John Kerry was.

Ron Paul is an isolationist because he hates the idea of wasting money on nation-building?

No, he's what I call "neo-isolationist" because I believe he would be too reluctant to use military force in the defense of our vital national interests. His ideals are noble, but IMO his approach is better suited for a weak country that wants to keep it's head down in the international arena so that aggressive rogue nations (and other organizations) who refuse to interact in a civilized manner won't target us.

Having seen how al Qaeda works, I don't think a blanket rule against nation building is appropriate anymore (I used to). I think there's good reason to be skeptical of nation building enterprises and I don't think their cost and complexity should be underestimated, but I think it has a place in some cases. So I don't have much of an argument with Dr. Paul on this, but I'm not completely lined up anymore.

Quote:
At the same time, we must not isolate ourselves. The generosity of the American people has been felt around the globe. Many have thanked God for it, in many languages. Let us have a strong America, conducting open trade, travel, communication, and diplomacy with other nations. -- Ron Paul
I don't think it's a mistake that he's refrained from including the military in his list of things that make for a strong America. I'm sure he wouldn't try to eliminate the military, but he'd lean a long way toward pulling most of our troops home from everywhere else. That's too much for me.

I didn't really pay any attention to John Kerry's campaign until March of '04.
