Beuerlein agrees in principle on deal with Broncos

May 15, 2001
By Len Pasquarelli

In a deal that might not be announced for another week or two, but the latest example of how the talent-rich Denver Broncos just keep getting richer this offseason, league sources have confirmed that free-agent quarterback Steve Beuerlein has agreed in principle on a contract with the team.

Details of the contract were not yet available, but the sources said that Beuerlein turned down a more lucrative proposal from the Green Bay Packers, one of several teams that pursued him after the 14-year veteran was released by the Carolina Panthers earlier this spring.

That release came after Carolina officials failed in their efforts to trade Beuerlein, who started all 32 regular-season games for the Panthers over the past two years.

Beuerlein joins a quarterback corps that already includes veterans Brian Griese and Gus Frerotte, along with second-year pro Jarious Jackson, who currently is playing in the NFL Europe League. It is anticipated that Beuerlein, 36, will battle Frerotte for the No. 2 job behind Griese.

The Broncos will be the sixth different team for which Beuerlein has played in his career and his addition provides Denver arguably the deepest quarterbacks corps in the league. The Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins all indicated varying degrees of interest in Beuerlein over the past six weeks.

Beuerlein, who is not expected to begin throwing until next month because of offseason surgeries on his left shoulder and right (throwing) elbow, apparently chose Denver because of the lifestyle, his relationship with coach Mike Shanahan, and the opportunity to win a Super Bowl there.

The former Notre Dame star, who entered the league as a fourth-round draft choice of Oakland in 1987, previously played for the Raiders (1987-90), Dallas Cowboys (1991-92), Arizona Cardinals (1993-94), Jacksonville Jaguars (1995) and Panthers (1996-2000).

He has appeared in 118 games and has 83 starts. Beuerlein has completed 1,535 of 2,730 passes for 19,568 yards, with 121 touchdown passes, 85 interceptions and an 80.6 passer rating. Over the past two seasons, he threw for more than 8,000 yards and 55 touchdowns, including a '99 season in which he led the NFL in completions and passing yardage and earned a Pro Bowl berth.

The Broncos on Monday also met with unrestricted free agent cornerback Tyrone Poole, who was released by Indianapolis earlier this spring. The six-year pro, a former first-round pick of Carolina (1995), has played in 92 games and started 85 of them. Poole, 29, has never started fewer than 12 games in a season and has at least one interception every year in the league.

That's good news... as Denver has learned, Griese can be the MAN, but if Griese goes down there should be nice depth behind him.

At this pace, Denver could field an A and B team. Not to say that both would be superior, don't get me wrong. Sounds like these guys are content with their roles as depth, so we'll see how it works out.

Yeah, I know a lot of these guys have injury issues, but who doesn't? There's no gurantee that Green can be healthy for 16 games, or Holmes for that matter.

Shanahan knows that guys like Ed and Rod won't be around forever, and that he has a luxury at RB right now that won't be there forever. So, he is definitely building a "win now" team, but the good thing is they're young for the most part and should be solid contenders for several years.... barring major injuries.

A luxury at RB?

Terrell Davis is now officially injury-prone, and Gary is coming off a major injury. Anderson is all The Rat has right now.

BTW, Denver's depth is average at best, although Herlein will be a decent back-up.

Clint, I can't take anything away from what you said, but... if KC had Davis, Anderson and Gary sitting there on the roster, wouldn't you be pretty optimistic about their chances of having a solid running game this year?

I thought so. Do you really want me to believe that Holmes and crew are better than what Denver has at RB, injuries or not?

This is one of the best signings the Donx have made IMO. They actually need this depth. It doesn't look like Griese can last the whole season, and the Ferrett is not an adequate back-up on a SB contender.

Add Beuerlein to Walker, Kennison and the players Denver re-signed as the useful offseason moves IMO.

fargnfrmmph!

Donks are starting to remind me of the rich High School of the county. Of course, living in Denver doesn't help.

I can answer that, no. He wouldnt.

This is a good signing for Denver...they will be relying on him by mid-year when Griese is out with another injury.

And the rich get richer.

Good signing MHM. Barring major injury, I'm picking Denver vs Baltimore in the AFC title game. With Robinson out and Rhodes in you might have the D to to take it all.

Solid signing, mainly because I think Ferotte is a joke...

If used properly, Richardson and Holmes (both healthy) could easily hold thier own against Davis and Gary.

IMO Stephen Davis has nothing that Richardson doesn't, except playing time.

This is a very good signing for the Donx. On paper, they seem to br the class of the West. The Rat has made all the right moves EXCEPT signing McGlockton.

Damn, this is a good move for the Donx. Frerotte is an idiot.

Now I guess I'll have to hate Beuerlein's guts.
