Big 12 Basketball is about to get a shot in the arm

CnnSi has Texas Tech ranked 24th in their preseason poll.

Here is some notes on Coach Knights recruiting success:

Once hired by Texas Tech, Knight focused his attention upon the junior colleges in hopes of finding a "quick fix." The results were outstanding, as the Red Raiders signed a full complement of five recruits, all from the juco ranks, and all highly regarded by most scouts.

First, Knight personally greeted high-scoring (27 points per game) 5-foot-10 1/2 Panola (Texas) JC sophomore point guard Will Chavis at the airport when the quickster from Philadelphia flew in to visit Lubbock, and a commitment followed within 48 hours. Next, the Red Raiders got the nod from a pair of frontcourt men of Eastern European descent. Ermal Kuqo, a 6-10, 270-pound Albanian center who spent his sophomore season at Seminole State (Okla.) JC, turned down overtures from Illinois, Kansas State, Charlotte, George Washington and others in order to play for Knight. Note that while Kuqo, an academic qualifier who signed the previous year with Tulsa but remained in junior college when Golden Hurricane coach Bill Self left for Illinois, is ranked among the top 50 juco sophomores by most scouting services. One coach in his conference considers him to be highly overrated.

Also ultimately picking Texas Tech as his collegiate destination was 6-8, 225-pound small forward/power forward Pawel Storozynski, a sharp-shooting native of Poland who posted big numbers this past season at Dodge City (Kan.) Community College. You may recall that Storozynski actually gave South Carolina a verbal commitment late in the season but then looked elsewhere when Eddie Fogler stepped down as the Gamecocks' head coach. Pawel chose the Red Raiders over Illinois, Kansas State, LSU, Baylor, Tennessee and Oregon.

Most recently, Knight has corralled two more juco sophs, 6-6 small forward Kasib Powell of Butler County (Kan.) Community College and 6-8 power forward Billy Pharis of Westark (Ark.) JC. Combined with the other three signees, this gives Texas Tech arguably the best spring recruiting class in the nation

I hope Knight fails miserably.

Maybe he can learn a few tricks from other Big 12 coaches, but not vice versa.

I can't imagine any coach needs any pointers on how to physically assault their players or how to heave foreign objects onto the court.

Sorry, Tech fans...his meltdowns are inevitable. You might as well lay back and enjoy them!

BTW any ranking involving one of Knight's teams is always inflated because of his past successes.

Well, ANY improvement to the Big XII is good IMO. For too long, this has been a one-pony show (KU).

ISU has been playing well for the past couple of seasons - perhaps they'll step up further. they are well-coached and play hard.

MU is ranting and raving about their new boy Quinn S., but he has yet to deliver.

OU and Sampson are decent, but not consistent.

OSU has gone downhill.

Nebraska - football school

CU & KSU - uh, do they still have basketball teams? :p

Texas - big budget, too much hype - WAY overrated

Baylor - one great player, one great game. Cellar-dwellers with the Cats and 'Buffs

A&M - another football school

Tech - Knight brings character - something this league needs.

"Tech - Knight brings character - something this league needs."

Is this sarcasm?

Actually, no. How many 'characters' do we have coaching in the Big XII? This league needs some personality - we need to get back to where we once were: coaches like Brown, Stewart and Tubbs. Coaches fans LOVE to hate - and coaches who LOVE to entice. Sadly, this has become a soft conference - sure, Alford and Williams have their teams playing solid basketball - but when they face ACC, Big East, Big 10 or PAC 10 teams in the tourney, they are revealed. We need to infuse some toughness and character - and like him or no, Bobby Knight does this.

Clint,

Whether you like him or not he is great for the conference...The conference will get huge revenues from TV, merchandise and ticket sales...

I will be willing to bet that every Texas Tech home and road game will be sold out...Even the non-basketball places like Nebraska, Baylor and Colorado...

Texas Tech has sold more merchandise in the 1st month Knight was coach than they had in the previous 10 years combined...

I suggest you pull for him cause he is not going to fail...And when runs through the Big 12 in the next couple years it will only pain you even more if you are pulling against him...

"Just lay back and enjoy it...":D

HC,

Trust me on that...His style of ball doesn't require a long break in period...He might challenge for the title this year, but he will definitely challenge for the title with two years...

nap - I hope so... really, I do. KU used to stroll through the conference with hardly a challenge. Lately, ISU has been playing very good basketball, and it has done nothing but help improve this conference. MU fans think they're poised to contend - but of course, I've heard that ad nauseum - and it never comes to fruition. But who knows, anything is possible, right? ;)

D'oh! Thanks for pointing that out Jim. We are discussing Knight, whose progeny was Alford - who is the HC at Iowa. Alford was rumored to be the primary candidate for Knight's old job at Indiana. I referred to ISU, then confused Alford for Eustachy... you can see where the confusion arrised, yes? ;)

I aplogize to any ISU/Iowa fans out there who may have been offended by my little faux pas

;) hehe

The Iowa Hawkeyes have an ungodly amount of talent this season...Most pick Iowa to win the BIG 10 this coming season. And why wouldn't they. They return Reggie Evans, the nations leading rebounder, who also averaged 18 points a game last season. Luke Recker, who most are billing as the BIG 10's Player of the year next season, is also returning. He averaged 22 points a game last season. Iowa has one of the top freshmen in the country coming in. Pierre Pierce averaged 37 points a game last year and is a 6'4 point guard. Iowa also returns 6'7 defensive specialist Duez Henderson, and IOWA's MR.BASKETBALL, 6'8 Glen Worley. Iowa has 2, 7 footers on there roster, who both have a lot of talent. Iowa Hawks, picked to win the BIG 10 and are vying for a National Championship this coming season.

Indiana Mr. Basketball,

Before you crown the Hawks the Big 10 champs don't forget that the Hoosier will be returning every single player if Haston pulls out of the draft...

Indiana?

Who cares? Recker punked the Hoosiers in their last meeting with a broken kneecap and shooting off one leg most the game. I can't wait to see what he does when healthy.

That is one way to look at it...The other way is that IU knocked him out for the season up in Iowa...Just think what they will do to him when they get him back in Assembly Hall...:D
