Anybody use Nero?

With my new PC I got a Lite-On 20X DVD burner.

It came with a Nero 7 Essentials DVD, and I'm wondering what all the software can do.

Today, I use at least 8 different pieces of freeware to perform various tasks (burn DVD-R's, burn movies, encode AVI files into DVD format, etc.)

Can this one piece of software take the place of all of the freeware I'm using?

Nero is pretty good... especially Recode.

For PC I've been using Slysoft, as it does the best job of converting to various formats (IMO). On the Mac I use Roxio Toast and Popcorn.

I have an older Slysoft program (CDCopy) but I don't hardly use it anymore because I have freeware to do the same thing.

If it ain't free, I don't want to do it.

But if I can eliminate 8 apps with just this 1, I'm into that...

AnyDVD is a must. It removes all copy protection at the drive. That way you can write with any program, because it looks like nonprotected content.
CloneDVD is the rough equivalent of Recode, which 'right sizes' a movie to a SL/DL blank.
Recode takes longer and looks like it does more thorough analysis of the content before resizing. Haven't done a head to head comparision of the two though.

here's a site that compares the versions of Nero and what they feature.

Doesn't like any of the 'essentials' have recoding or authoring capabilities.

So it WILL take the place of the programs (AVI2DVD and ImgBurn) I'm using to burn AVI and DVIX to DVD...

Thanks! I knew you'd show up.

I don't copy DVD's, so I haven't needed this yet.

Thanks for the site!

Hmm...maybe I spoke too soon..

All OEM Suites:

Nero Express instead of Nero Burning ROM

No Nero Wave Editor
No Nero SoundTrax
No Nero Image Drive
Trial version of Nero Digital Encoding Plugins

I'm not gonna use this if I have to pay for it.

NeroVision Express is the program that does all that...it's part of the big Nero package.

Just download it dude...easy to get off any torrent site.

Well, if it's trial version on the CD, I assume I would HAVE to in order to use the CD. "Trial" almost always means "use it for XX days and if you like it, pay the man".

Or I could do what GOATSE suggested.

How much bloatware is it?

I got Pinnacle Studio with my ATI card a few years ago and I ended up uninstalling it because it was just so much crap that I never used...

Nero 8 is the entire package...here's what 7 gives me:

If you want, you could just grab the old version of NeroVision Standalone... (just the DVD authoring/burning software).
