Barbecue spots!

My friend and I are headed to KC soon and wondered where the best barbecue could be found.

If you would, include address/phone number for reservations.

Thanks in advance for your help!

My favorite place is Smoke Stack (now called Jack Stack), and it is in two locations; the original (I always prefer an original) Martin City, MO on the corner of 135th (old hghwy 150) and whatever (it is right in the center of town), and there is one on 95th and Metcalf which, I believe, is in Overland Park (I am still trying to learn all of this). As for numbers, I don't believe you need reservations, but I can look them up if you really need 'em.

Arthur Bryant's....18th and Brooklyn....414-7474...the sauce is not what most people expect...it is an acquired taste...but for the money, this is the best and my favorite...

LC's...5800 Blue Parkway...923-4484...most people that have tried LC's swear it is the best in KC....it is very good and the sauce is more suited for everyone....

Gate's...Linwood and Main...753-0828...this is your standard BBQ that appeals to everyone...expensive though for what you get...but hey, if it's Jason Fatlock's favorite, it must be good...

Your best bet...go to Bryant's get the sandwich or ribs without the sauce and then go to a grocery store and some Gates sauce...

Or just taste the Bryant's sauce, you may like it...

Damn, now I have to get some Bryant's after work...

You'll probably get a bunch of different answers to this. Lots o' folks like Jack Stack, but I haven't tried it yet. Gate's is a local favorite, and is all over the place, but I haven't tried that either. We generally get ours from a place called Smokehouse because it was close to where I used to live in the Northland, but they have several different locations, as well, and are always crowded. There's lots of small mom-and-pop type barbecue places too that different people swear by (we used to eat at a place called Hobo Joe's, also close to my old place, but it closed down).

All-in-all, I really don't think you could go wrong with whatever you pick because I've never really heard anyone say "Don't go there, they suck!!!" (although I'm sure someone somewhere has...). Maybe get a list of a bunch of different places, close your eyes and pick the one your finger falls on. Flip a coin. Whatever... ;)

I don't think reservations will be required anywhere unless you have a particularly large group, but it can't hurt. Like hader, if you need some addresses or #s, just ask, I live in KC as well.

Raiderhader,

I don't know where you live or work but Jack Stack just opened a place downtown...on 22nd street or somewhere...they sent me an e-mail for a free appetizer...if you want me to forward it to you, maybe you can use it too...just drop me a line at Joe_Shockey@yahoo.com

Keg, I tried once but only because I didn't have any at home and didn't feel like going to the store...I used kethup and a bunch of other stuff and it actally tasted pretty good...didn't write down the ingredients so I can't duplicate it now...there goes my BBQ sauce empire...

LC's is the best(so I'm told... I've still not tried it)

I went to the JackStak at 95th & Metcalf - worst service I've EVER had in my life! I had to get the hostess to bring us our drinks(only two people, AFTER lunch rush no less), waited 45 minutes for two simple platters, had to send mine back because it was cold, and got attitude from the waitress. The manager 'comped' us, but I was still pretty pissed. I might give them another chance - but not for a while...still a bit steamed.

Gates is good.

KC Masterpiece is good too - College and Metcalf, also on the Plaza(I'm sure there are more, but those are the only two I've been to)

Arthur Bryant's is probably my favorite. I've many great memories of going there before Royals games when I was a kid. :) Sauce is spicy - not as sweet as others - and therefore usually termed an 'acquired' taste. It's good stuff!

Oklahoma Joe's Bbq & Catering

47th & Mission Rd
Kansas City, KS 66103
(913) 722-3366

Now also served at the Kansas Speedway.

You should know it is in a gas station/convenience store/resteraunt/liquor store so no reservations are needed and the dining is informal. Excellent BBQ though (and this is coming from a KC native).

Others worth trying:
KC Masterpiece - more upscale, still great
Gates - middle grade restaraunt, some people can't live without it
Bryant's - greasy spoon where your food is served in newspaper, KC classic

David,

I am very fond of LC's BBQ (address & phone listed below post #2 by 58Forever).

If you want to check out reviews of many local KC BBQ joints, check out this web page that I stumbled across a while ago:

58,
the email is on the way.:D

Keg,
I have been wanting to try making my own sauce, but I have never gotten around to it. Maybe one of these days...

HC,
I can't say as though I have ever eaten at the one on Metcalf (if I have I was to young to remember), but I was at the one over in Martin City just last night for my BDay and everything was fine. As I said earlier, you can't beat an original. But I will try another location for a free appitizer.:D

Update!

Inspired by this thread, I convinced my fiance to pick up a rack from LC's tonight.

And the verdict is...

Wow.

Best BBQ I've had anywhere to date. The meat was good and smoky-flavored. The sauce was good, nice flavor with a mild spice to it. The beans were great with big chunks of meat. I even liked the french fries, and I don't usually like steak-cut fries (can't have more potato than grease you know...).

We'll be getting that again! ;)

(But not too soon, I can see my gut growing as I type this)

I know a great BBQ spot, actually, its all around the nation and the world, its a place called McDonalds. They have a sandwhich called the McRib. You can get a combo there called a value meal. A frie and a coke is accomodated with the sandwhich. And you can supersize it for only 33 cents! (note: I wouldn;t though, its too expensive to supersize) Its the best sandwhich in the country, that McRib is! McDonalds is also good for taking your prom date to go out and eat after the big extravaganza! She'll love it! But, remember, don't let her supersize, its toooooo expensive. :p :D

CG

hope I could help

I no longer live in KC,

Bryants is KC classic and my favorite but I love spicy BBQ

I would say Rosedale BBQ 600 Southwest Blvd, Kansas City, Kansas is or was one of the top three. Anyone know if it is still there, last time I ate there was 97.

LC's is indeed top notch

If you are OK with seedy like at Bryants you will love Laura's BBQ and Stuff 7445 Prospect Kansas City, Missouri, again if it is still there. This was probably the best prepared meat in KC and the sauce is equisite as long as you like spicy hot BBQ sauce.
In second tier Haywards BBQ was better than Gates after Gates went bigtime commercial. There are too many places to name actually when it comes to second tier, I always liked the hole in the wall somewhat seedy place for finding top notch KC BBQ, if it is either modern looking or really nice (like the commerical Gates) it usually is just mediocre.
