Questions on DVD playback and 1080i

Ok here is the deal

I am looking into buying a new DVD player to replace the piece of crap I have now.

I have a JVC 57" Wide Screen projection TV that is rated at 1080i

It has NO HDMI as it was purchased back in 2003 but it does have component input.

My questions are these:

If you buy a DVD player that is rated to 1080p will I NOT ONLY be wasting my money but will it result in crappy quality since I don't have 1080p resolution? ( I have read reviews on Blue Ray that if you don't have 1080p then quality of DVD on screen is actually WORSE and NO I am not looking at a Blue Ray)

If can buy an UPCONVERSION DVD player that is rated at 1080i but it says it is only upconverted using HDMI does that mean it is USELESS a waste of money when I can only use the component video?

Toshiba does make an HD-DVD player that is 1080i and if I buy an HD-DVD Movie and play it I am guessing I can still get better picture than with a normal DVD player with normal DVD using component video connection on both?

My biggest concern is that I don't want to spend $ on something that is not going to be any better than what I already have.

Anybody got some good answers or advice on this?

Yes.

I thought about that and does the HDMI to DVI have any loss?

I wanted to run EVERYTHING from my Onkyo Home Theatre and it doesn't have any HDMI either. I guess I could run the HDMI to DVI from the DVD player and use the optical audio to the Home Theatre amp. Does that sound feasible?

It shouldn't. I have an HDMI upconvert I watch on my Vizio LCD. The quality is VERY close to watching an HD movie on HBO.
