some PC techno-geek help, please

I need to do a complete reinstall of XP Pro on one of my PCs, but I'm having a problem- I can't get it to boot off the XP installation CD. I've gone into the bios and changed the order so it hits the CD drive first, to no avail. I've also created a startup disk from within XP, but when it boots to the A drive, I can't get to any drive but A or B. I can't make the switch (from within DOS, of course) to either the C drive or D drive- just get a 'no drive by that name' sort of message.

So- if either my PC would boot off the CD, or I could get to the CD drive from my startup floppy, I'd be good as gold on reformatting and reinstalling. I'm appealing to those much more in the know than I for a solution to the problem.

I've also gone to bootdisk.com and gotten the 6-floppy set of XP install discs, but I want to reformat the C drive (contains XP), and that won't work as the files from the floppies are installed onto the C drive...

I have my installation CD on a HD, I then created a BartPE startup disc and run the installation from there.

if it was preloaded with XP then (like Bob said) it might have a installation partition on the HD drive already. That partition might be what is screwing with your boot process.

if you know what brand the hard drive is you can usually download and make a installation disk from their website. At least Maxtor and Western Digital both have one.

put the boot disk in the floppy drive .... bios with floppy first

at C: type fdisk

you will get a list of options .... one option should be "show partitions" or something like that.

should show you what your hard drive partition situation looks like.

What would hard drive partitions have anything to do with a computer not booting off a CD?

Download the Windows Windows 98 boot disk with CD-ROM support boot disk from here.

http://www.svrops.com/svrops/dwnlddisk.htm

It contains a generic CD-ROM driver. If it does not load your CD-ROM drive to D: (or E, then i'd say something is wrong with your CD-ROM drive.

If it does map to D: , go to the i386 directory (cd i386) and run setup.exe.

if the boot sector of the hard drive has been altered ..... like maybe with a preloaded installation partition, it can screw it up.

Actually it's winnt.exe

And you can't read your XP partition because it's formatted as NTFS, which can't be read from DOS without a NTFS driver.

Download NTFS4DOS and it will make a floppy that will load an NTFS driver. You can also use it in conjunction with the 98 bootdisk described above and have access to both the CD drive and your NTFS partition.

Thanks to all! I'll try all of the above suggestions...
