Edwards wins FOX and CNN focus groups on debate
I figure if Ron Paul gets a thread every time he uses a square of toilet paper, I sould be able to brag on my guy for a second.
Edwards Debate Performance Wows CNN And Fox Focus Groups By Greg Sargent - December 13, 2007, 5:03PM Though the exchange between Hillary and Obama at the debate was most attention grabbing to the media, it was John Edwards who most impressed the voters who were assembled by CNN and Fox News to gauge reaction. The Edwards campaign sends over this quote from CNN's Mary Snow, announcing that Edwards won the network's session: Twenty-three registered Democrats came in here undecided. We asked them who they felt performed the best in this debate and they concluded they felt that John Edwards performed the best, with Senator Clinton right behind him. Meanwhile, ABC News' Rick Klein kept an eye on the Fox News dial sessions with voters and says that Edwards' answers repeatedly drove voter responses high up and off the charts, live-blogging as follows: Here's Edwards shooting broad once again – ‘join together to take this democracy and take this country back.’ At least the fourth time he's sounded that theme -- if you're an angry Iowan, you've got to love that message. And the Fox dialers certainly do." ...and, later: Fox News is doing running dial-testing -- and John Edwards is quite literally off the charts with that answer about the tax system being rigged.” So these voters, at least, call it for Edwards. http://tpmelectioncentral.com/2007/1...cus_groups.php |

I've been saying it for about a month now. I believe Edwards has a strong possibility of surprising everybody and taking Iowa. (I put little stock in polls, especially where caucuses are concerned). Of course, you've proven me wrong on the commitment of his base, so I've wavered a bit on that... But upon reflection just this afternoon, I believe that there are going to be a lot of Democratic Iowans who face the caucus wondering if a black man or a woman can *really* win in a general election.

I was able to watch this debate on FOX. As the OP article says, they had the "running dial testing" displayed next to the picture of the candidates. I noticed that Edwards was consistently pegging his.

The only thing that Republicans would need to do is to post his response from one of the debates saying the war on terror is just a war on paper. Whoever thought that Edwards won the debate must have been listening on the radio. His us against the big corporations schtick might work with some, but its not going to sway the average voter tired of another conspiracy theorist candidate. What's with all the blinking. The guy should get his eyes checked.
Do we realistically think that a guy who didn't run for re-election in North Carolina because he knew he would lose, and a guy who provided no bump as a VP candidate can win this election? He has six years experience in public service. His only redeeming feature is his pretty boy looks. Just how many $400 haircuts will he get before he mispends his campaign into bankruptcy? Democrats need to stop looking into style and start looking at substance.

It's going to sound silly, but I think that voters pick up a lot of nonverbal cues from the presentation people make via their voice and mannerisms. There have been a lot of studies done on this. People who are tall are usually taken on first glance to be more intelligent than others, for example. More attractive people are seen as more qualified by job interviewers. I think we have probably all seen some news magazine show doing a study like this. He comes off as paranoid, checking under his bed for big corporations every night. To me, from what I have seen so far, he looks like he's wearing a lot of makeup and his hair is always overdone. I'm not saying these things are important, but people do notice things like that even if they don't mean to. I remember a lot of people talking about how much Al Gore seemed to be sweating back in 2000, and the same of Nixon famously in a debate too. People want strength, and while Edwards might be able to recite what base voters want to hear, in black and white, he doesn't radiate strength like I think people desire. He doesn't strike you as a guy who has that tough side like I think people feel the President needs to have. I think America would vote for a woman, the right woman, but they won't vote for a butch chick, or a girly man. People don't get a good vibe from you if you don't fall into the paradigm they feel like is 'normal'. I don't think people will vote for someone they see as some kind of a weirdo. They might even say they don't take stuff like that into account, but we all get a general feeling of whether or not to trust someone, and if they seem to be a weirdo, you don't really connect with them. And yeah, the average person doesn't think the war on terror is 'a war on paper'. They might differ about the scope and level of danger, but nobody really thinks that it's just a work of fiction. |
