Mentors and Proteges: A Question

In the NFL, we definitely see an Old Boy's Network in place. Coaches have "their guys", who they bring with them in any job. For every Herm Edwards, there's a Dick Curl on his coat tail. When Dick Vermeil arrived, he brought a legion of gray-haired old guys in minor roles. Every time a new coach comes in, he brings along guys that are "his team" and kicks out most or all of the existing staff who currently hold the jobs.

I think the same thing often happens in the real world, too, at least at the CEO level. You hear about the CEO coming in, and then pretty soon he's got a whole team of loyal assistants on board. Same with government, though that's a little more institutionalized in the party system.

So my question is, have you ever had a boss where you were one of "his guys" and followed him from position to position? Or as a boss, do you have people who are "your people" who you have pulled along with you as your career advanced? Just curious. I never had a boss who ran interference for me and pulled me upwards, and it seems like it would be a nice thing.

Then, at places like Arrowhead, there are the undead. Actually no, Arrowhead is the only place this happens.

It is a nice thing. I've been on both ends of it. You get in where you fit in. You work closely with individuals and you gain an insight into their thought processes. When you find one that closely matches your own, that's called teamwork.

Yeah, once.

I did a few "Special Projects" for a superior that was out of my department at Universal. He left for Paramount and once he evaluated his team, he brought me in as his "right-hand man" and soon thereafter, we cleaned house. I brought in a protege at Universal to work under me.

It's nice to have hard working people you can trust.

Though in Dick Curl's case, we've yet to find out exactly what positives he brings to the table.

Though I hear he makes a mean crab bisque that he serves to the other coaches that work late.

And, it doesn't appear that he ever played a down of football. Maybe there is hope for me being able to coach somewhere...

...

Bleh, there is a better chance of this board never seeing an antifreeze joke after this post than me becoming a coach.

I read the guys page, but I didn't see any ties to Carl before 89. I guess I'm wondering, where the **** did he come from? Was he a Marty leecher that sucked onto Carls hip or what?
